Travis,
My son is 6.
Weather looks crappy for the next few days. Gonna take alotta luck to get it done. Went this morning to pinpoint the bird for saturday since it's supposed to be raining here in the morn, and only heard 2 birds way off gobble once apiece. It was strange... it was clear and pretty, but there werent even any other small birds chirping. It was dead and stagnant. Guess it was too huimd or something.
Well, i got some TSS #9's loaded and patterned yesterday eve. The little 20 gauge had 205 pellets in 10" circle at 40yds...Dead bird any way you look at it.
Now, if this dang weather would act right, we would be in business. Supposed to storm most of the day tomorrow...not good for dragging a kid around in. Gues we will just have to see.
Good luck and y'all bring him home

Good luck to you and your little man!!

I sure hope the weather clears up for you guys to get the job done. Even if you dont get to bring one home, if he can get out and hear some good gobbling I'm sure he will have a good time. Again, Best of luck!!!
Good luck to you and your son! I sure miss taking my son on youth days. Enjoy every day hunting with him now before he gets older and discovers girls. :)

Did he sling some of your handloads at them? If so, just blame it on you for not loading them correctly
At least you guys got a good hunt with the bad weather. Good luck on those longbeards next time!!

Yep!, He slung a load of those high dolla #9's...but, thats what i loaded them for. I think he pulled up when he shot and shot over him.
It was windy and cold Sunday morn and we hear a pair gobble 2 or 3 times as far away as you could hear...That was it. I'm probably gonna bust the first longbeard i see next weekend, then take him until he can close the deal.
The story from Saturday:
It stormed all night and was still drizzling Saturday morning, but i took my 6 yr old anyway. I was expectring nothing, but we found a group of gobblers gobbling good on the other side of a river that is the border to our property. This river is big ( 80-90 yards) wide and i usually hear them across it, but you know as well as i do, the chances of calling one across this big river are slim to none, at best. Nothing else was gobbling, so i told him we would go down there to this group and at least get to hear some gobbling.
By the time we got to the river bank they were on the ground and i cutt at them and they all gobbled about 200 yards away. We sat down on a tree about 40 yards from the top bank of the river and i cut again and they gobbled about 100 yards out. I waited a minute or so and did a 15 second series of aggressive cutting and they gobbled right on the other bank. It's started raining now, and we couldn't hear good. I waited 30 seconds and yelped softly and they didn't answer. I knew this was happening...i told Anden to get ready...
After about 20 seconds i look to our right about 25 yards away and there is 2 longbeards topping the river bank. We eased the gun over on them and they putted but never ran. they walked out to about 30 yards and just stood there. Then a third walked up over the bank and i told him to shoot that one....Anden shot and they flew back across the river.
I think he yanked the trigger and shot over him. We were both disappointed. What a great encounter though. It was pretty awesome to call those birds across the river, none the less.

That's an Awesome hunt Quinn. I know your boy was fired up and now more anxious to smack one in the face then before. Good luck next weekend! :z-guntootsmiley:
You must have been throwing some sweet talk to them to cross that river like that. Sounds like some hot birds. Now that's the kind of bird I like to find. Dumb and desperate.........kinda like me. I sure do hope Anden can connect with them soon. I'm rooting for yall!
I'm sure he's good and mad at em now, next time I'm sure he'll be stompin on a gobs head. Make sure you take a few pics of that, it'll be PRICELESS!
Good luck to you guys, GET R DONE! :smiley-char092:
