One of my favorite striker materials is made from old ax handles. Hickory ax handles make some of the best sounding strikers. I do not know if they impregnate the hickory handle with something to stabilize the wood, it is very easy to turn, the shavings peel off the wood and it is very smooth when you finish. The wood is "Plain Jane" but it is one of my favorite striker materials. Do not throw away those old broken ax handles, stick them on the lathe.
