Title: Camphor burl - anyone try it?
Post by: lightsoutcalls on May 21, 2012, 10:07:28 AM
I recently ordered some camphor burl from Gilmer Hardwoods.  I have never used the wood before, but was told it turns similar to walnut.  I also know that it will clear the sinuses when turning, due to the camphor oil in the wood.
I was curious if anyone here has used it before?

I ordered enough that I will hopefully get 12-15 calls out of it.  The grain in the pics looked beautiful with lots of burl character.

Your gonna like it Wendell. I made several pots out of it two years ago. It turns nicely, takes a finish well and is very durable. Plus, your shop is going to smell awesome for a few days. And the sinus thing isnt bad either

This is a pic of a Camphor Burl trumpet I made awhile back. It was nice to turn and smelled liked vix vaporub. Especially where the red spots were.

Oooh, that's nice!

If you guys are looking for some, Gilmer wood has a special going right now.  Woods are listed with stock numbers.  Their home page has a note that numbers below 24,999 are 25% off.  You might check it out.  Their home page says there is a $100 minimum order, but if you order online, you can get away with an $80 minimum.

Camphor burl came in yesterday... shop smells like a combination of root beer and vicks.

Once cut, the wood had more moisture than I expected.  Blanks are drying now with all surfaces open to the air.  Hopefully they were dry enough that they won't crack.  Some nice grain on this stuff!
