Title: Bird # 1 for Turkeyguy
Post by: willy8457 on May 08, 2012, 06:49:49 PM
April 30th started out cold in the low 30's
Willy and I had worked a smart old bird in a small wood lot since the opening day.
He'd gobble starting at 5 AM.
This morning not a peep. I sat on the field edge thinking he'd left over the weekend when he cannon balled into the center of the field. I yelped twice. No response. In no tine I lost track of him After twenty minutes or so I thought he left so I let out a loud put. Not a peep  Shortly after He appeared and started to march down to my location but, at about 80 yards he cut to the left not to be seen again.
I'm not sure but my decoys lack of enthusiasm on a windless morn didn't help.
Around 7 I packed and moved to another location.
My first setup at the new location produced a stealth gobbler that snuck thru the swamp like a dark shadow.
I saw him 3 or 4 times in the thickets at about 65 yards enough to tell he had a gobblers
Softball and that he was going in a straight line that didn't intersect with my setup.
I waited but nothing after 40 minutes I moved and setup about 100 yards away at a spot Willy and I called in a gobbler a hen and a coyote on last Friday.
I clucked once after I set out a
Cooperative decoy and waited.
After a few minutes I cut a series then yelped a series
In a couple minutes I could hear scratching. A hen and three gobblers that I could just barely see over the noel. The hen within about ten minutes feed through just past my decoy and, I thought the gobblers would line up and follow so I could have my pick of the litter. Ever once in awhile I'd see their fan or softball stick up over the hill.
This went on so long that I had to slide back into the shadow of the tree I was set up on.
I purred, soft yelped, and clucked. No luck  In desperation I cut hard and, one foolish Two year old stuck his head up high enough for a shot and a prayer,
but, not nessaceraly  in that order.
Out of 5 gobblers and a hen that i saw i never heard any of them make a call. Good luck to you all.
Regards,
The Turkey Guy
