Title: Late Season Decoy setup
Post by: woodwzrd on May 08, 2012, 01:39:26 PM
I was digging around this morning and found out that there are a bunch of left over tags for an area I used to hunt when  was a kid. I am thinking about picking up a tag for our last season up here in WI which runs May 16th through the 23rd. I have a couple of farms that I may be able to get on and hunt.  I will not really be able to do any scouting other than to make a couple of phone calls to some land owners and get their input on bird activity.  Not only is it a late season, with the early spring we had this year it is really late. I was wondering what you guys thought about decoy setups for late seasons like this.

I have been hunting just north of you and had a tom react in a negative way to a jake decoy.  The birds I called in the other day came in to look at the hen decoy.  I am going to use a hen in the fields and nothing in the woods for the rest of the year.

Jake decoys in the early season. Hen decoys in the late season, if at all.

I like useing hens decoys in late season in the fields with a Jake decoy..behined the hens say 30 yards or do....ive seen where the old gobbler would run in and reacted better ...guess he thought he beat the decoy Jake to the hens all because the decoy was set out 30+yards away from the hen decoys
