Hey guys I plan on patterning my SBE 2 using a lead sled. I know this gun uses recoil to operate so im pretty sure the shells will have to be manually ejected after each shot. My question is can I damage the gun by taking away all the recoil the gun needs to operate?
I have never liked to tie/hold a gun down. I have seen it change the way they shoot. Now it could hurt the gun but dont think it will. I have aways had a rack that the gun sets in but you have got to hold on to it. If the recoil is bad get you a towel and fold it a few times.
I think you will be ok but after you find what you want shoot it free handed to see if it is the same.
You will be just fine as long as you don't use too much weight. I use two 5 pound ankle weights on my lead sled, 10 pounds total and it is enough weight to take away the bruising effects of recoil but you will not damage a gun. Just remember.... Don't Use Too Much Weight!

It will damage a bsquare mount on a benelli SBE. I actuallty broke 2 mounts with my Benelli
Thanks fellas. I think im going to ditch the lead sled idea and put up with those 3.5" shells for just a few shots. I do have a limb saver butt pad that I will add to the gun for taking those shots.
get you a PAST recoil shield or something like that for your shoulder and wear good hearing protection. Sit up streight so your upper body can rock back with the recoil. I see guys hunching over turkey guns on benches and wonder why they want to punish themselves that bad. If you us a bench find a way to prop the gun up high enough that you can sit up streight. I personally skip the bench and use a Stoney Point bipod and sit on a stable stool. It is plenty stable enough.
I have shot mine from a lead sled for years with no issues.
You will be fine with the sled if you choose to use it. I broke a B-square mount this spring, shooting off sand bags and my shoulder. As far as the gun operatiing, yes it uses recoil to operate the bolt, but the butt resting on something firm causes the bolt to move backward. If you just hold the gun up with one hand out infront of you and shoot it , it might not work right, as the entire gun will recoil backward. You need to have the butt against something firm for it to function, so shooting it in the sled will be of no problem.
I have never had a problem with the sled, but i never tie it down either. You will be fine shooting it .
Ok guys I will try the lead sled with about 10-20 pounds. I will not strap the barrel down so the gun can recoil some. Thanks for all your help.
I use one 25# weight that fits on a weighlifting bar. It works great.
