Hey guys im just wondering how rain affects a bird and their gobbling. I went out this morning and had a bird roosted maybe 150 yards away but it rained really hard just a I got there but it died down once I started calling to him. He would not answer too any of my calling but I knew he was there. He has a couple hens with him too so maybe thats why hes not talking but has anybody else notice that birds are a lot less talkative in the rain or is it just a tight lipped bird??

A sleet storm will also shut them down. Lightning on the other hand will light them up.
There was a lot of lighning and thunder too though...
They generally go quiet during a period of heavy rain, but before and after they will gobble like normal.
Sounds like your bird was henned up. No need for him to gobble when the hens are right there with him.
He Had what he wanted, Thats why he was'nt Gobbling.
Every situation is different, but the all-morning monsoon that barreled thru here yesterday morning definitely shut 'em up.
A storm came up fast and my client hunter and I were just wanting to get back to my truck. Lightening cracked close by and a tom gobbled close. I moved him toward a food plot and spotted the tom standing there in the downpour. I started calling with a trumpet call and he gobbled with darn near every cluck and purr. He stood still for a minute or two just gobbling then came on in with the hunter pulling the trigger at 30 yards. It poured for 15 more minutes then finally stopped. In this instant, this 4 year old gobbled like crazy.
Ive noticed over the years when it rains light-medium it doesnt effect birds much and they usually go on about their business. when it pours though i tend to stay inside until it stops then i hit the fields as thats where they will be heading to get the fresh bugs
Hey thanks guys for all of the info! What about when there is a group of jakes in the area??? There are 4 total and only 1 long beard (the one I have been hunting for 2 years now and have never ever had him gobble at a call)...could the jakes be the reason?
