Title: NC BIRDS HAVE SHUT UP.
Post by: Turkeyridge Calls on April 30, 2012, 01:41:29 PM
Man I'm bummed out ...I hunt nc mountain game land ....I hunted open day and I haven't even heard a gobble.   Everybody I've talked to heard tons of gobbling preseason but when season came in nothing.....all well two more weeks of season so I'm going to have to suck it up and hunt harder....

I haven't heard a gobble from a roosted turkey in 10 days.  Right now I have no idea what stage the birds are at on our club in NE NC.  Some places I see gobblers and jakes back running together and called up a couple of hens together last Fri. evening. Then we have one gobbler that goes out and roams a 30 acre field all morning gobbling his head off, but will not come to calls.  Been a tough year overall with only 2 birds killed on about 1500 acres and the one I killed basically just walked by the edge of the field I was on last Thurs evening close enough for me to shoot.

Took a friend of mine out this past Saturday and called up a longbeard on public land that I've been trying to kill. Finally got him at 20 yards in full strut, and he missed. Shot a sapling about 10ft from the end of his barrel. Too bad the bird got away, but we both got to see a good show. That bird gobbled 20 to 30 times and never gobbled until he flew down off the roost. Took the old man out Monday morning and had some birds gobble good on the roost, but shut up as soon as they flew down.

Late afternoon hunting has been ON FIRE this past week though. If you can get one to gobble, you've got a good chance of killing him. Although, I think these temps in the 90s will put a damper on that too.

Glad I'm tagged out.

Yeah,
Been slow in Pitt county.  I did witness a double last Saturday morning.  But we knew exactly where they were hitting the ground and the guys made good shots.  They were dead within two minutes of hitting the ground.  They never gobbled but one time up the tree though.

Congrats on the kills ......I'm not going to give up ....I'm just limited to hunting as much as I used too.

I think everyday you can get after a longboard ,gobble or no gobble is a good day....
