(http://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac2/brentsmith6/100_2433.jpg)First bird of the year for me, and a first bird ever for a friend.
His bird came sneaking through the fog and appeared out of nowhere. Last we knew he was 100 yards away with no intention of coming to our calling because he had hens. Could have been a new bird I guess.
My bird came in guns blazing. From first gobble to first flop wasn't 5 minutes. We played the "was that a gobble" game with some construction noise, but he wasn't far and came in lit up like a marlin in the spread. He would cut me off with every sound I made, so when he tapered off, I knew he had come into the clearing where I couldn't see him.
Then I heard a vehicle coming. I knew it would either spook him or the driver would stop and gawk, which would spook him. So I cut hard on the call to get a bead on where he was and leaned to my left to see around the bush. There he is, full fan, blue and white glowing...one more big lean to the left and send the 7's on their way. It wasn't 30 seconds before the vehicle rounded the corner and passed by.

Tale of the tape.
His: 21 pounds, 10.5 inch beard, 1 inch spurs.
Mine: 25.5 pounds, 10 inch beard, 1.5 inch spurs. Never had spurs curve this much, or spurs that were white, not pink or black.

He'd have been a limbhanger, but I was affraid he'd break the limb. He did a number on my shoulder on the way out.
