Title: 870, Hastings Choke, Hevi #7
Post by: Hunt4Meat on April 18, 2012, 09:19:01 AM
Hey, I got some great numbers using this combination. 304 in 10" at 40 yd, mid 60's temp and no wind. Problem is that is was about POI was about 8" off of POA.

Right now, I have decided to keep it under 40, and if need be, adjust POA to correct the POI.

This is my everyday gun, that turns into a turkey gun for about 4 weeks each year. Is this the smart thing?

Not really.  The smart thing would be to put adjustable sights or better yet a dot sight or scope on it.

But that is your decision.  And it's your gun.  My 870 shoots pretty much deadnut at 40yds.

Different chokes change my poi sometimes. I put a ssx in my 870 sm and it changed my poi 9 inches. I have adjustable sights on it but wasn't liking my back sight maxed out to the left. So I just changed chokes and the problem was solved. Give the remington HD turkey choke a try, it kept my poi & poa dead on and threw a nice pattern.

8" off in what direction?

8" to the left.

Run of the mill 870 super mag, just a front bead sight, Hastings choke, I think its a .670 (don't remember off the top of my head, adn gun is at home). I fired 2 shots and both were 8" to the left, so I do not think it was me pulling, or if I was, I was consistant.

That's a very common thing with the 870 if the barrel is not super tight in the receiver.

You can many times cure a POI issue by tightening the magazine cap as tight as possible with your hands and then, using some padded pliers, tighten it 3-4 more "clicks". That cap is all that holds the barrel in the receiver and it can torque pretty easily just when the shot is fired.

I hope that helps.

Thanks,
Clark
