Title: Help with Hooks call
Post by: spltlim on April 17, 2012, 07:01:40 PM
Hi all, new to the mouth call game,  got myself a Hooks enforcer and a seducer. On these calls what side goes up? as in against the roof of my mouth.  I thought that the longest reed went up.. But with both these calls when i have the longest reed up they are ridiculously raspy more raspy then any other call I have ever used... With the long reed down they play a little sweeter sound...What way is up ?   Thnaks

Longer reed always goes on top.  There is a tab on the frame and it goes down too.

It'll take some practice to control the rasp and work it out and bring it back when you want it.

It's hard to to make a call raspier than its built for but an advanced caller can clean up a raspy call for the front end of a yelp, whines and small talk.

Spltlim,
I used mine with the longest reed down for a couple of years until I was corrected by a fine member here on OG.  Called in and killed several birds during that time period as well.  This spring, I was corrected, so I started practicing and using them the way they were designed.  I also noticed that there is alot more rasp using them the correct way.  Our season started last Saturday and I've been experimenting using the call both ways.  If I have the longest reed on top, my calling sounds very raspy like an Old Boss Hen.  If I turn it over and put the longest reed on the bottom, the call sounds like a higher pitched Young Hen.  Which is Right?  I'm going to keep experimenting and see what the Gobblers tell me.

Mouth calls are designed to place the cut reed on top and the tab on the bottom.  I must admit, I made the same mistake of trying them upside down before I was "schooled".  :icon_thumright:

I just purchased the Hook's Executioner 2 and the Enforcer. These are easier to work that some of the others. I like them a lot. You may wish to try these two calls. Good luck.

thanks for the tips guys !!!   I was just unsure with the amount of rasp I was getting out of the calls,   Been playing with the calls the last few days and have been able to figure out how to clean them up  a bit and loose some of the rasp..couple more days till the season opens here in NJ...Good Luck to all and thanks again!!!
