Title: sighting in question
Post by: mr meat on April 17, 2012, 12:51:46 PM
the two 870,s are getting drilled/taped, when i get them back how should i go about sighting them in!
both have been deep cleaned/polished
i was thinking to shoot at a large target at 40 with just the bead to see what poa/poi is before mounting red dot on the one. wifes (Kathys) and to get a 40yd count,or just sight it in first at short range before doing the 40
Thanks. Wes

Sighting with the bead won't tell you anything you need to know. Mount the sight (use loctite and let it dry for 24 hours), clean barrel (boresnake), load the gun with with a dove shell, shoot at a dot in the center of a large sheet of paper at a distance of 20 yards, make a mark on the paper that is the center of the shot pattern, clean your barrel, load up another dove shell, set the gun up in a solid rest (sandbags) and put the crosshairs/dot back on the original aiming point, holding everything still, have someone change the elevation and windage to move the sighting point in the device to the new center of the pattern. Put up a new paper with a new aiming point and shoot again with the dove shot. The pattern should be centered on the aiming point now. Move the target out to 40 yards, clean the barrel, shoot another dove shell to check that everything is still good, put up another sheet of paper with a target point, clean your barrel, load up with your intended turkey load and shoot the aim point. Your pattern should be right on. Adjust if needed.

Good luck  :anim_25:
