Title: First day Iowa public ground
Post by: Mailman on April 16, 2012, 01:22:36 PM
Today started at 4:00am. Rainy cold and 25mph winds.  Set up on field line. Man was that wind cold hitting me in the face. Was set up by 5:15am. Couldn't legally shoot till 5:56am. No gobbling and nothing moving. Thought to myself I didn't want to be here turkeys probably don't want to be either. Went back to the truck and unloaded decoys and all extra equipment. All I took was gun gobble lounger and 1 Hooks mouth call (sassy girl 2). While heading to woods see 2 hens in different spots. Thinking crap, shoulda stayed were I was. Got deep in the woods to get away from the wind. Called off and on for an hour. Nothing. Stayed sitting still. See movement to my right. Yep it's a bird. Couldn't tell if it was a Tom or not. He starts quartering away from me. He's about 70 yards away. I call to him. He squared up and hit a road at 40 yards. I then can tell its a Tom because of his beard swinging. Touched off my SBE 2 with FF 2. Loaded up with my handloaded 3" 2oz of TSS # 8's  He dropped like a rock. 22 lbs, 3/4 inch spurs, 2 beards one 8 1/2 the other 4 1/2. This would. Of have come together if it wasnt for my dad. He never turkey hunted but we did a lot  of deer hunting and squirrel hunting. He tought me woodsman ship and most of all patients and to be still and quiet. Was a good hunt. First double beard. But by far not the biggest.

I was thinking about a topic similar this morning....seems so strange that some states turkey seasons have not even opened yet and we in Mississippi have been open since March 15th and still won't close until May 1....PA is one example....love those states with later seasons!!!
