Title: new to me 1300 Turkey special...any load suggestions?
Post by: gtrjames on April 16, 2012, 12:51:58 AM
I just picked up an older Winchester 1300 NWTF Turkey special with the green laminate stock and 22 barrel...comes with the factory extra full tube.
Does anyone have any experience with load choke combos?

Nice gun. Did you pick it up on gunbroker. I have been watching one on there. Anyway good luck with it. I hunt with that same setup as a matter of fact me my father and brother all do. We are still shooting lead win HV #4's and have great luck with it. I'm shooting an old tru glo mark bansers wich I believe is similar to the ssx. However I did pick up a few new chokes to try out with some of the newer rounds. As soon as time allows I'm going to play around a bit.

I believe any of the after market choke tubes (.655 - .660) will improve your pattern over the stock x-full. If you shoot lead, try Win 3-2-6's. Hevi Shot 3-2-6's or 7's. Good luck!

I have one. Right now it is running a Truglo GSX and Nitro Blends for Hevi loads. Running a Comp-n-Choke XXXFull and Winchester 3-2-6's for lead.

The Star Dot and EM H13 3-2-6 is a good combo as well as Win 3-2-6 or 3-1.875-6 or 3-1.75-6.  My two also do well with lead and the Hevi approved nonported Carlson 660. The Carlson does pretty good with hevi for a hunting pattern(160s with 6s), but not as tight as the SD(180-200).

Thanks for the replies...no, I did not get from gunbroker, I found on auction arms.
I killed my first bird with one borrowed from a friend back in 1999, and have kind of always wanted one since....at least that's my current excuse for another shotgun ;)

I got one of those back in 1989 for a highschool graduation present.  Now I'm 41 and have been turkey hunting with it almost exclusively.  About 4 years ago, I did pick up a Remington 870 youth 20 ga and killed 10 turkeys with it.  This past season I went back to the Winchester and killed two with it. Since I got the gun, over a 100 turkeys have been killed with it.  Many were killed with the factory xfull choke using Winchester 3-2-6 lead shells.  When the Win Supreme 1 3/4oz 6's came out I switched to those.  Patterns aren't exceptional but work.  I'm getting around 85 to 95 pellets in a 10" cirlcle at 40 yards with lead.  Never tried the heavy shot. It seems to kick like a mule, but has always been reliable.  Also, it's really easy to clean.

James:  I have the exact same gun. I put a Pure Gold Choke on it and shoot Hevi 13s  #7s. It put 206 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards which is good enough for me and really bad for the gobblers. Good luck with it. Doug

I shoot a PG .670 out of my 22" inch pipe and it's getting in the low 240"s in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards with HS 3-2-7's. Great little guns and easy to carry. Good luck with yours.

I've shot one for years and years and years. That thing is a turkey killer. I started off back when they came out with the factory full and Winchester #5's, then went to a .655 comp-n-choke back in the late 90's with Winchester HV #5's and it was devistating on turkeys then for the last years I've been shooting a Rhino .660 with Nitrocompany shells I started off using their economy loads and they had a great pattern I think I was getting in the 240's but I think the item number has changed since I was shooting them now I am shooting H378i 4x5x7. I've been using them for about 4 years now. I haven't done a #'s count on them since I bought them but I think  I was getting in the 260's but don't quote me on that since it has been so long ago. I usually just check it prior to season and if I want to just shoot it I just use high brass #6's just to plink around with it.

That has been my only turkey shotgun since the day they came out, and used the first generation 1300 turkey special before that. Ran #6 2oz federals threw 50+ toms till a few years ago when I switched to a JH choke and Hevi 13 #7's. What did you have to pay for it, I have a nib spare I may sell. I am building an 870 20 also looking to downsize a bit. These 1300s do kick like a mule is the only drawback.

A guy owed me some money & offrered me a NWTF Win. 1300, I'm think'n cant go wrong with a trade like that & took it off his hands.

Took me a while to get it dialed in but finally hit the choke/ammo lottery with a the TruGlo Strut Stopper & the old white hevis,3inch round with #6 shot was good for 165/175 in a 10 inch at 40, good enuff for me.

Wouldnt ya know it they quit make'n the old whites the next year, I still have nearly 3 boxes but when ther gone its back to the draw'n board.

My 1300 has been passed down to my son. I ran a Comp-n-choke for a while but found a couple of Star Dots at an old sportings goods store. It patterns good with Hevi13 3-2-6 and has been used to take several toms. It handles well, patterns good, and kicks like a mule!

I just did some playing with my 1300 this may. I have been shooting winchester hv #4 for about 15 yrs. This year I decided to try some newer rounds and chokes. I shot 6 different chokes and 5 different round combos. Ill just cut to the chase and tell ya the best for me. IC  660  hevi shot 3" # 6 put 260 in a 10 at 40. I am not going with that combo because poi was a bit off and I hunt with a bead only so since I have know adjustment Im going to go with my Truglo Mark Banser wich gave me a nice even 180 in a 10 and even all around. Stardot was also very nice. with blends, 6's and 7"s. If I wanted to hunt with a sight it would be the IC.

That's simply amazing.  :happy0064:  I've got a scope on my 1300 and if I had 260 with #6, I'd be done searching for life. What kind of numbers did that star dot and mag blends put up? Now you"ve got me wanting to try an IC choke.

I am barely breaking 200 with Nitro's in my 21" NWTF from the 80's. With H13, I run 180+ with 3-2-7's and 150's with 3-2-6's.

I have gone back to the OLD Federal 3-2-6's and with my Comp-n-Choke I am turning right at 120. That is where it will stay.

I saved all of my targets so I will check the other numbers tonight.
And my 1300 has a 21" barrel and has never been polished. I did do a deep clean before I did this testing but I did not swab in between shots.
