Title: CRAZY GOBBLER
Post by: wcgobbler on April 13, 2012, 01:53:23 PM
Everyday since last Sunday, my Dad or I have seen a stud of a gobbler in the back of his field.  I can only hunt early during the week, so I can't sit out in the field & wait all day.  He gobbled 3 times last Monday and has not opened his mouth since, early in the morning anyway.  The stink of it is, we have never seen another turkey with him.  He is always alone.  I can't make him gobble from the roost, in the early morning or late evening.  The only thing I have to go on is that we see him in the field in various times of the day.  I think he's the boss.  In the binoculars, looks like at least 1" spurs & 11" beard.

Two questions:  1- Why won't he gobble if he's always alone?  It is not hunting pressure.  We own several hundred acres, & only I hunt it.  2- How do I kill him?   I'm thinking a full strutter decoy in the field, gobble on a tube at daylight, get in my blind & wait him out.  Your thoughts?

I wouldn't use a gobbler decoy. If he was the boss he would have hens. You can kill him by sitting up where you keep seeing him. Note the times you've seen him and make sure ytou are there before that time. Call sparingly. If he has been whipped he will come in silent and sneaky. Good luck,
