turkey hunters are uber-secretive,especially the successful ones. How many have you killed? Anonymous poll.
Killed my first turkey in 1965, first longbeard in 1968, and killed my last one last year. So thats three.
I've killed around 15 or so. I've been hunting them since I was 12, that's 12 years. Early on my dad and I were lucky to get 1 per year between the 2 of us. Now we are doing pretty well, usually filling our 4 tags total. There's not much that is more rewarding than slinging one over your shoulder, but we sure learned a lot during the years that we struggled.
7 in my three years of turkey hunting
I have been turkey hunting a 14 years. The first 5-7 years, I never pulled the trigger. We did not have a lot of birds and I had no clue what I was doing hunint in the hardwoods and cut overs. Then the birds moved to the farm country around my home town and I have shot 9 in the last 7 years and called in a few for others. So the first years were bad, then I learned a few tricks and grew up which has led to more birds riding home with me.
I am very close to 30 longbeards, not counting a few jakes along the way when I got started turkey hunting. :z-guntootsmiley:
11 turkeys in 2 years.
not enough
I really can't say....i have been hunting these turkey birds for about 40 years and let me add that i have been made to look like a fool many a time...now that being said at one time i had about 42 beards in my collection but lost them to a house fire a few years back with most of all my hunting stuff....we here in Ms. can kill three gobblers a year and many years i would get my limit and some just one or two, but last year i didn't even raise my gun to shoot. But also let me say that it's not always the kill that counts.
Just one. ;D
I have been very blessed since I was 14 to have been in good turkey hunting areas. I didn't start out like gangbusters and have dwindled somewhat in the last few years. My problem is that I spend lots of my kill time taking others out and calling for them. If not for this I would definitely be in the 150 plus column by now. If I do half right this spring I should get close to my 5 bird limit . We shall soon see.
Enough to know I get the fever to go kill them again every spring!
For the first 7 yrs I didn't pull the trigger either. Then a buddy took me out... that year I got 2 birds about 10 yards apart and 3 weeks apart, both 24 lbers. Total 9 birds, 2 being Jakes,( of which 1 was 20 lbs.)----Biggest to date is 28lbs. w/ a 13 1/4" beard. Taken in N.E. Iowa. Think I'm gonna head back there this year.. :gobble:
to be honest i am not sure but somewhere in the 25-50 range. IMO its not the number of kills vs the memories for each. I would take 1 awsome hunt with my best hunting buddy vs 20 killed by myself.
To say it's been tough is an understatement, been hunting em for years here in Bama and the lack of birds in my area hasn't helped much.
I do my best and get lucky every now and then, Id say 9 or 10, give or take a few.

YOU SHOULD TAG OUT EVERY YEAR. AS MANY BIRDS AS BAMA HAS.

ANYBODY SEE THE 75 YEAR OLD MAN IN NASHVILLE SELLING TURKEY CALLS. HE HAD 280 BEARDS HANGING BEHIND HIM ON THE WALL. :newmascot:

Been trying to "TAG OUT" for years, I'm happy if I get even one bird a year these days.....number 5 seems to elude me year after year. ;)

More than some and not as many as others. ;D

We ain't got any birds here in Bama.
God Bless,
David B.
I'll get back to you when I'm done....
a few over the 30+ years of chasing them
As we can see with the post about telling your friends information about the turkeys that you are hunting, Turkey hunters Lie. Hardcores killed 9 or 10. He's killed that many in the last 2 years. Like most here I haven't killed enough to get my fill of it. My belly still burns with fire each spring to hear that bird gobble and to hear and see those gobblers strutting. I have killed 94 to date and have called twice that many to the gun for others. I am on the Quest for 100 this spring. I will have 7 tags. I hope 100 comes this spring so I can start on the next 100. :icon_thumright:

Not that you need it Joe but I wish you luck and I hope you have even more fun killing the next 100.

I dont think I will ever kill enough... Its all out war on turkeys for me... when i see turkeys something goes down.. I black out and when I wake up I see dead birds...
In 2010 I shot 16 with a bow in the spring and fall and 3 with a gun in the fall. Most of the bow kills are on video.7 longbeards,3 jakes and 6 hens/poults.The fall gun kills were hens.I also shot a nice 8 pt. buck that got to close to me in MO. while bowhunting turkey in Sept. That was a nice bonus.I've only killed 5 deer in my life.Turkey hunting in the fall is my passion.
Every single one that comes in still unasses me just like the first. When that is not the case, I will walk right out of the woods and quit.
Started back in 1976, there vere not very many birds around here then. Been going hog wild since. I am looking for #150 this spring, the last 120 have been longbeards. I just wish I could have been able to hunt out of state when I was younger.
I sometimes wonder what I would do with all my time and money if I did not hunt turkeys???

Started turkey hunting in '00 and I'm gunning for my 50th bearded bird this spring! And I have every beard to prove it! As far as just tukeys hens included 60-70
Been doing it 22 years and don't remember ever not getting at least one.....so ALOT! :icon_thumright:
i've taken arround 16,in the time i've started hunting gobblers....... taking only 1 in the first couple three years and then realizing the eating was good so i kicked it up to my limit ,,2 each spring.. i'm gonna try to raise the numbers and start fall hunring for toms ,i've never done that
Let's see, 25 years of :fud: x :-X :gobble: per year = alot of :newmascot:
Not enough yet ;D
Not all of them yet :z-guntootsmiley:
As a genuine "Old Fart", I can attest that these are "The Best of Times", with regard to turkey killing, not just turkey hunting. When I first started hunting we got fired up over just finding "T n T", which for you nimrods is "Tracks and Turds". Why, when I first started hunting, I used to carry a tintype picture of a gobbler so I'd know what one looked like.
Not enough, :z-guntootsmiley: 8 in 4 seasons

From what I've seen that would be a good idea for some others.
One.
Looking forward to my second season - just put a shurshot on the 870 and ordered a slate call from Wendell at LightsOut - can't wait to get out there!!!
I'm thinking about the next one not the last one.
Have not kept track like I should but somewhere around the 50 mark give or take a few.
this is going to b my 26 season and i havent kept track por over ten years but its been alought and many more that i call in for kids
:newmascot: 133 and God willin many more.
None since last spring. :gobble:
Not nearly enough! :fud:
I've been fortunate to kill at least one every season I've hunted.
Called in a few more for friends and seeing someone take their first bird is a blast!
I really wasn't sure but I counted 53 longbeards I've saved, maybe another 15 jakes and a few fall hens with the bow since 1994. That's hunting three states yearly (NH,NY,CT) with a 6 bird combined bag limit. It's been fun but it's ruined my spring fishing and I'm starting to slow down.
still lookin for my first....... of 2011 :z-guntootsmiley:
Lost count. But I'd say 20-25 in 14 years of hunting.

I don't care who you are, that's funny! :z-guntootsmiley:
A couple
This will be 23 years and not as many as I want to!
28, most of them public land Osceolas. My goal is to kill a bird in all of the lower 48 states. So far, I've scored in Florida, S. Carolina, W. Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Oklahoma and Nebraska. I hope to get my next one in 16 days!!! :fud:
I am just under 50 total gobblers that I have killed since I have been hunting them. I have lost several of my fist long beards to mites where they just fell apart into nothing so make sure that you that you take care and cure your beards. Of those only 7 were jakes and they were all killed when I first started with this addiction.

:agreed:
i killed my first spring bird 30 years ago this spring. i have been taken by the sport every since.
Looking back, I wish I had kept a more detailed account--but as they say "hind sight is always 20/20". Numbers never did mean much to me. To this day, I don't make a habit of measuring beards and spurs unless they look to be really special. I did some cyphering and I estimate I have killed over 80 but less than 100.
All that matters is the next one..... :icon_thumright:
I almost killed one last year ;)

;D I figured you for 4, tops. Personally, I don't have a clue. I barely remember last year. ::)
more than I've needed to, but not nearly as many as I've wanted to. ;D
Not enough yet, but I'll die trying to kill enough!
Don't know if I'd like to kill 40+ in one year like some of the die-hards, but I'd sure like to try ;D
mudhen
I have shot 4 birds, hopefully 2 more this year! :z-guntootsmiley:
to be honest . all i think about around this time of the year is last years hunts and this Spring. the number of birds taken has never been a issue with me. after 30 years of chasing Spring Gobblers i still feel a void. i just can not get enough
I've never thought about keeping track of the number killed. I'm 42 yrs old and been hunting turks since I was 14. I'm too far into it to start counting now.

thats why a journal is important-someday the memories may fade and the journal will help freshen up the memories to a foggy mind.
