When the paddle of a box call becomes smooth or not sounding like it usually does which direction do you sand it, across the grain or with it? Also what grit sandpaper to use and how much to sand the surface? On one of my calls it looks like it was sanded with the grain and two others across the grain. Thanks! :icon_thumright:
Here is what I do. I like sanding my lids at a 90 degree angle to the playing surface. If you chalk it real good and play it you will see where the lid rubs the sides of the box. They usually will have a cross, if you play both sides. I sand in 1 direction across those lines. That way the lid will grab better. This is just the way I do it and the way I was taught by an old box caller.

TRKYHTR's post is a good one to follow. I adjust grit to the hardness of the wood, the more dense the wood the more course the grit.
