Title: "Corncob" 835 load?
Post by: lowoctane on April 05, 2012, 03:43:32 PM
Picked this up in a trade and it has a Jellyhead .690 in it. Am wondering what load(s) to run
through it. Thanks in advance!

I believe Stinkpickle nailed this on the head. Got one just like it. Its the round grip forearm. I'm assuming.

Havn't shot the gun in over 10 years. Sort of inherited it from a friend. Just sits in my gun safe.

They're the same gun as every other 835.  What I DO NOT recommend you do is shoot it supported by your bare knee.  My buddy did that, and when he hammered a big gobbler strutting in the deeks on morning, he never got up to run out to put boot to neck.  I got up and looked over to see him rolling around, grabbing at his knee that got the meat just tore off to the bone by the ridges on the forearm.  One of the funniest friggin thing I have ever seen in the turkey woods. His 835 no wears a smooth forend.   :TooFunny:

You made a smart buy.  Now just be sure and use a good quality shooting choke and you should be in for some super patterns.  I personally would recommend a Star Dot, but they are super hard to find.  But a TruGlo SSX .670, Pure Gold .670, Indian Creek .675 will give very good even patterns with a very good 10" and 20" patterns at 40yds.  But really any choke from .670 to say .680 or even .690 should work very well.  I hope to see some of your patterns.

The Jellyhead would be a good start.  Fire a few light loads to check POA/POI first.  Every Mossy barrel I've ever owned shot a little low.  I picked up a Jellyhead dirt cheap for my old 835 and I plan to try out a few loads in it tomorrow just for fun.  Most of them will probably be lead loads to keep Easter a little less expensive.   :D

Yeah, plan on spending some time with it. Bringing a red dot just in case I can't get comfortable with the ghost ring set up thats on it. Please let me know what lead the JH likes! Got lots of it laying around... ;D
