Title: Do these numbers equal a good pattern?
Post by: gobblercop on April 03, 2012, 05:55:08 PM
I've got a quick question for all you shot pattern pros.  I am shooting a 12 ga. 26'' barrel benelli nova with a Jellyhead choke.  The loads I am using are Remington Nitro Turkey #5 shot.  They are 3 inch shells with 1 7/8 ounce shot. I just shot at a 10 inch circle from 30 yards away.  I counted 152 pellets inside of the 10 inch circle.  Is this a decent number?  Would I benefit more by switching to a smaller or larger pellet?  Suggestions, advice, and constructive criticism welcome....

I think that is a good number.  30 yds would be your limit though.  We like 100 even spaced pellets in a 10" circle.  If you went with #6 shot, and a 3 1/2" shell to get more pellets, 2 oz or so, your pattern would be better too.  Winchester makes great lead loads that will get good patterns at 40 yds with #6s.

Which loads do you recommend from Winchester, Sugarray?

Others will have better ideas, but I'd try the Winchester supremes 3 1/2" with 2 oz #6 shot.  Even the ones in the Grey box have given others good numbers

Ray,
Why do you say he would be limited to 30 yds? He shot at 30 yds and got 152/10. He's still going to have 100/10 a good bit further. I'd love to see him shoot at 40, he may be good to there. I agree that any of the WW 6s should do the trick.

Agreed... His setup does not limit him to 30 yards.  Not to mention, he shot at 10" circle then counted pellet holes... This does not give an accurate pattern density count.  He needs to shoot the paper, then draw 10" circle around the most dense part of the pattern.

I would try the 3.5" 2oz. Winchesters in #6 shot.

152 with lead and 5 shot, from what I have seen, I just don't think his pattern would hold to 40 yds.  Just would have to shoot and see.

Here is a pattern I shot at 40 yds with 3" Win #6 HV Turkey load (black shells I believe)?  Pattern is spread out but even...I think dead bird even if I'm off 6" either way.

I also shot Mag blends 5,6,7 and got a decent pattern but a little spotchy.

Gun was a Weatherby PA-08 pump with Truglo Gobblestopper choke.
