Took my nephew out this morning for youth turkey opener. Heard 4 different birds gobbling on the roost, all of them a good distance away. Birds shut up after fly down for the most part. After a while finally saw a bird working towards us, he was a big one. After 30 minutes of strutting, gobbling, and the occasional few steps towards us, he finally decided he couldn't take it anymore and came running into the decoys. Told my nephew we have been over this many times, take your time and make a good shot. The bird was at 15 yards, and excitement got the better of him, his first time of catching the fever! His shot missed to the right, and took a few feathers off. DAMN it! Not sure who was shaking more, me, him, or my dad. Well the bird was not injured, he went to a group of trees 60 yards away and hung out for a while, just too nervous to come back out. Best thing was my nephew said he was not discouraged and that he will kill him next time, love the attitude. Did end up finding about 10 pounds of morels though, told him we are saving a few to go along with his turkey when he gets it.
Sounds like y'all had a great day and he has a good head on his shoulders!
Nice job jarbo03.
You have made a hunter out of him for life. I hope he gets another chance at that bird.
John
Glad he was able to call him in so close!
Wait! I just reread this. Nice morel haul!
Was definitely a good bag of shrooms, could have found more but my nephew had to drop a deuce, so it was time to go. Will be chasing same birds this Friday, he gets a few days off from school since they did not have any snow days this year. Rain tomorrow, once the sun comes back out, morels should go crazy again.
