Title: OK Gun Gurus, Help a Bro out.
Post by: Gooserbat on March 27, 2012, 11:09:24 AM
3.5 870 with a 26" polished barel, lengthened forcing cone, Indian Creek .665, 150 pelets @ 40 yards with Mag Blends.  What am I doing wrong?

I've always shot lead until this year and the numbers aren't that much more impreseve,  I shoot in the 120s with Win HV #6, and my old Balistic Specialties .655 nonported choke.  I tryed it with the Mag blends and got around 140.

The Indian creek patern was full of holes some were as big as 2" square while the Balistic was nice and even.  I had the barel done by a Gunsmith the specialises in shot guns and has a very good reputation.  I just don't get why it don't shoot any better.  I'm open to sugestions or trading chokes.

What do you think about Sumtoy, or Pure Gold.

I myself am not a big fan of IC chokes for a variety of reasons but if I had to pick the #1 reason it would be because of the inconsistant patterns that I have personally experienced with them and the patterns are full of holes. I would suggest trying a Pure Gold .670 choke. My 870sm 23" VR barrel loves the PG .670 and throws hellasish patterns with it.

Make sure you clean the inside of the choke good after every 5 shots or so, it can build up with alot of plastic from the wads! I find that taking a copper bruch on a piece of cleaning rod and putting it in a drill works well to get the plastic out! After that id maybe suggest the Hevi13 2 1/4oz #6 load! The gaps you are getting may be from the larger #5 pellets in that load influencing the less dense #6 and #7 pellets1

If you want to try out different choke tubes, a few proven tubes for the 870's would be the jellyheads in .660 or .665 either should work very well.  Another cheaper option is the remington ventilator from cdnn.  There are many guys getting excellent, turkey killing patterns without breaking the bank with that choke.  I personally use a .665 jellyhead with a variety of different HTL shells and have never been disappointed.

I'm no guru with a turkey gun my any stretch of the imagination but you may not be doing anything wrong. Just a load/choke that doesn't work in your gun. Just patterned mag blends an 7s through a jellyhead .665 and a hevi shot .662. The jellyhead averaged 202 with 7s and the hevi choke averaged 226. When I shot the mag blends the hevi choke averaged 212 but the best number I got with the jellyhead .665 was 122. All of the mag blends were the same lot #. Choke and bore were cleaned thoroughly before each shot. Just my experience.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. I'd try a Hevi-13 turkey choke with your gun and those shells. I think the results might surprise you.

Thanks,
Clark
