Title: Remington model 17
Post by: lmbhngr on March 26, 2012, 09:47:25 PM
Just inherited a remington model 17 20 ga. The gun has a 23/4" chamber full choke barrel. I looked into nitro and they make 23/4" shells. Any suggestions what shot I should try for this gun?

I don't know about shooting Hevishot through those old guns. You might want to stick with lead. Those older guns steel sometimes won't handle the Hevishot stuff and cause scoring of the bore.

It's not just scoring of the bore.  Steel and HTL can cause a ring bulge in the barrel at the choke, especially a full choked gun.  You might get away with it for a while, but it isn't recommended.  I can't imagine Nitro recommending a load for it.  I have two M17s myself and wouldn't consider jeopardizing them with HTL.  There just weren't that many of them made.

I have a Model 17 with a full choke. Several years ago I shot 1 pattern at about 20 yards with a Winchester 2-3/4 #6 Supreme Express load & was impressed with the pattern.  I didn't feel comfortable about shooting 2-3/4 magnum turkey loads though.  I look forward to seeing what you find out.
