My buddy recently had a serious neck surgery and was trying to outfit a soft shooting 20 for this year. He bought a Jellyhead choke and had some 3" 1 1/4 oz. "pheasant load" 6's.
He has a helluva pattern at 35 yards and an acceptable killing pattern out to 40 with these lead loads.
I was very surprised at how well it patterned. I counted 36 in a 3.5" circle in the center at 30 yards.
He was shooting a Beretta 391 Urika with what I believe is a 28" barrel.
A mutual friend was going to put a mercury recoil reducer so it should shoot very soft when finished.
I know 6's should be 6's. so shouldn't these "pheasant" 6's do OK on a turkey?
Yep.
yep, especially considering pheasant loads are usually faster than turkey loads, resulting in more pellet energy.
Excellent. Thanks guys. :icon_thumright:
They shoud work, but do not be surprised if one gets away or has to be shot again, keep it inside of 40 yards, and clear shots.

I would also recommend that you slip a Shooter's Friend Recoil Pad over the existing recoil pad. It has a very large footprint and very soft material. It helps more than might be imagined.
Thanks,

Thanks Clark. I'll see if I can't find one around this one horse town before our trip next week.

Why would they be any less deadly than a slower 20 ga "turkey" load? Same size shot, decent pattern and higher velocity, should be pretty effective
they will work just fine if the shooter does their part
A lot of turkeys bit the dust with that load...back before it was a 40 yd plus game.
My buddy's son has killed turkeys the last 5 yrs with 2 3/4" "pheasant" loads. Last yr he took a 27lb. bird. The shots have been 20yd. or less. Get the birds close and your friend won't have a problem.
