Butternut box with a Purpleheart paddle, really nice raspy caller with very good range.....

Nice looking call.

Do you know why it is the tradition not to checker or cut grooves in the body of the longboxes?  Most are not worked to the extent of shorter boxes, but that example has more art than a typical longbox.

The only thing I can tell you is that the sides of long boxes tend to be thinner the short boxes, those that are hollowed out by hand. I haven't thought about that before, I have seen so many woodburned and even carved on the paddles and woodburned on the boxes, but yet to see a checkered one....pappy
