I took my Mossy 930 w/ a PG choke out to sight-in the red dot and to shoot a couple rounds at 40 yards. Keep in mind that this was only my second time to sight-in a red dot. Well, it took 5 rounds (2 3/4'" federal high brass #6) to dial-in the red dot at 20 yards. I think the red dot is more accurate than me. I'll be the first to admit I need to improve my red dot shooting skills. I shot a couple of 2 ¾" Winchester Supreme Turkey loads #5's and #6's at 40 yards. All the shots were a little high and to the left, which could easily been my human error. At least, my POI seems to be consistent! I haven't had time to count all the numbers yet, but one of the targets had approximately 135 hits in a 10" circle at 40 yards. I'm not very impressed with the PG's overall patterns so far... I'd like to see tighter groups! What type of numbers (10" Circle) should I be hoping for at 40 yards shooting 2 ¾" shells? Thanks.
Dont think the choke is your issue. PG is a great choke. However you ammo i have never liked for anything past 25-30 yards. Switch to Hevi-13 #6's or #7's, polish your barrel and i bet $20 your numbers come way up.

i do have some Hevi-13s, but i wanted to use up some of my old shells for practice. i'll bust out the hevi-13 when i get a little better shooting the red dot.
I don't understand what you mean by get better shooting the red dot. You put the dot on your target and pull the trigger.
I'd dial it right in with a rest, then shoot the Hevi Shot when you are ready.
I use a led sled to sight in. Makes it much easier and more consistant.
You want atleast 30% to 50% and over 100 pellets.
search "pellet quantities" Find how man are in your shell and do the math.
i'm very curious what 2 3/4 shell it was that gave you your 140 in the 10" at 40yds
if your getting 140's with a 2 3/4 shell then you are good to go, no need for hevi shot, those are great numbers with that shell and combo
optimally in order to kill a turkey you should be able to put a minimum of between 90-100 pellets in a 10" circle at 40yds
lead 6's are 225 per oz
lead 5's are 170 per oz

i wish i had a sled; i can't afford one right now. so, i just shoot off a rest.
I'd say you have a pretty dang good choke. 140 hits with a 2 3/4" #5 is outstanding. Run some 3" or 3.5" Hevishot through it and those numbers will sky rocket.

140 with 2 3/4" shells @ 40 is very good numbers. Once you switch over to the Hevi-13 your going to see your numbers go much higher.
Here's the #'s I counted tonight:
2 ¾" Winchester Supreme Turkey loads #5's (PG choke) = 97 hit in 10" circle @ 40 yards
2 ¾" Winchester Supreme Turkey loads #6's (PG choke) = 156 hits in 10" circle @ 40 yards
i'm not sure if they were the 1 5/8 oz. or 1 ½" oz. loads...

For a 2 3/4 inch shell those are some rocking patterns. Those 6 numbers are the way to go. 156 in a 10" with lead 2 3/4 says puregold makes one heck of a choke.

YEAH,I was sittin here laughing about this one, wait'in on someone to reply about his dissatisfaction of the PG with 2.75 lead.Friend, allot of folks don't get those #'s with 2 or 2.25oz's of lead!NICE!!
you should be very excited with those #'s from a 23/4"load !!!! I'm really anxious to see those H13 #'s :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:
sounds like you will be ready. best of luck
Sure this is 40 yards?
Is that a new 2 3/4" 4oz shell?
Those numbers are amazing.
wouldn't waste my money on hevi if i was getting those kinds numbers with a lead 2.75" shell, congrats

it was 40 yards measured w/ a laser range finder. so, it might of been somewhere between 38-42 yards. also, i listed the wrong shell before. i was shooting 2 3/4" Winchester Supreme Turkey loads #5s & #6s; i'm not sure if they were the 1 5/8 oz. or 1 1/2 oz. the only reason i'm not satisfied w/ the PG this year is because last spring my groups looked much tighter with a different barrel. unfortunately, i had to replace the barrel after last season. although, i don't have any #'s from last year to compare the two.
Man, That is the best lead 2-3/4" count I've ever heard of. Sight that thing in and go hunting.
I've patterned more lead shells than I care to remember and 150 in the 10 at 40 has been my all time best. That was from a 3.5" load.
Your #5 count is outstanding for 2-3/4" as well.
You're getting better numbers than I got last year out of everything I tried, 3 and 3.5 H13 included. I hate you ;D
Seriously though, I would not change a thing if my setup was
a: shooting groups that solid
or
b: shooting that well for CHEAP
Congrats man!!
QuoteSupreme Turkey loads #5s & #6s; i'm not sure if they were the 1 5/8 oz. or 1 1/2 oz.
My empty box of Winchester supreme 2 3/4 1300 fps shells came with 1.5 ounces of lead.
When you think about it....the 2.75" load isn't fighting for room going through that choke like a 3 or 3.5" shot column would do. Less deformation of the shot might be a reason for the good numbers on target with the 2.75" shells, or is that just a wild guess?
I thoght that was true for steel shot that wants to release tension loads after being compressed by a choke so they spring out. Good chance I am wrong about that though.
i went out today to get a little more patterning done. here are my Mossberg 930 24" Barrel (Pure Gold Choke) updated #s:
2 ¾" Winchester Supreme Turkey Loads #4's (PG choke) = 97 hit in 10" circle @ 40 yards
2 ¾" Winchester Supreme Turkey Loads #5's (PG choke) = 89 hit in 10" circle @ 40 yards
2 ¾" Winchester Supreme Turkey Loads #6's (PG choke) = 156 hits in 10" circle @ 40 yards
2 ¾" Remington Premier Turkey Loads #5's (PG choke) = 74 hits in 10" circle @ 40 yards
2 ¾" Remington Duplex Turkey Loads (PG choke) = 96 hits in 10" circle @ 40 yards
2 ¾" Hevi-13 Loads #4's (PG choke) = 53 hits in 10" circle @ 40 yards
2 ¾" Hevi-13 Loads #5's (PG choke) = 117 hits in 10" circle @ 40 yards
2 ¾" Hevi-13 Loads #6's (PG choke) = 135 hits in 10" circle @ 40 yards
Those are some awesome numbers for 2 3/4" loads, especially the #6's.

This thread has me cracking up.. Dude if you can get 140s with 2 3/4 lead, I will "Bow to my sensei" that is amazing.. I thought this one some guy that shot the H 13 7s and had 140s, than I went back and read and was like good grief, that is simply amazing..

very good for lead.
I have a Rem 1100 that only shoots 2 3/4. It has a hastings choke II barrel with a Hastings .660 choke.
2 3/4 Winchester Supreme Turkey #4 = 68 in a 10" at 40
DUDE..your patterns are great!!!! I would probably kick my wife out of the bed and sleep with that PG.
