Title: Hevi 13 Lot number tests. Old vs New(update with different choke)
Post by: Borden811 on March 11, 2012, 08:51:04 PM
I finally got to the range today to test the new lot number I got this year, vs. the old lot number I had. It was dissapointing to say the least. I shot my SBE II with a 26 inch barrel, and Jellyhead .660 in the tube. All shots were at a measured 40 yards, with temps in the low 60's, and a decent breeze blowing. I shot with the wind at my back. After I shot the first two shots, I shot one from each of the old lots to make sure something wasn't wrong with my gun(it was that bad). I shot the 7's and the 6's from this years lot numbers first, and then one from each of my good lot nunbers(2010)

This years shells
7's from lot # 300524        189
6's from lot # 300756          99

2010 year shells
7's from lot # 300324        304
7's from lot # 200514        258
6's from lot # 300159        233

Definately not what I was hoping for. I've got an Indian Creek on the way, that should be here tomorrow. Weather permitting I plan to shoot on Tuesday. When I do, I'll update the post with those number. I'm not shooting anymore of the good shells, except at turkeys, so the update will have pattern numbers from the two new lots numbers, and the IC. I've got my fingers crossed! On a side note, I shot a Winchester Supreme HV 3.5in 2oz load of 5's at 40 yards and had a count of 83. Not much worse than the Hevi 6's. I'm a little bummed at the moment.

That is a major difference. My SBE 2 likes the Indian Creek better than the Jelly head. Mine has the 24 inch barrel. Maybe that will do the trick. Good luck.

My 24" SBEII did better with a final strut .665 than the I.C .665 with everything except the win. elite xtend range #6's.

The Indian Creek tube came today. I should have results by tomorrow. I'm still baffled by the huge drop off in numbers. I ecpected some, like maybe 50-60 pellets, but not 100-150. I'll post the numbers tomorrow evening, after I get to shoot.

I know. That's what I thought. That's why I shot some of my older shells. They shot fine. Im going to try the IC today with the new stuff and see how it goes.

Too windy to shoot to day. 15-20mph. Tomorrow looks perfect. I'll post results as soon as I get home from shooting. As to the lot numbers. How bout it, no numbers, we can't check, or complain with as much merit. If the IC doesn't shoot the hevi's well, I may be another headed for the winchester ER.

I also noticed a drop in numbers with this years Hevi-13 3.5 2.25 6's as compare to last year.

I'm getting an average of 30 less pellets at 40 yards this year with lot # 300787, but can't remember what lot # I shot last year, but they were definitely better?

I bought two boxes of 3 1/2 magblends yesterday. The lot numbers were the same but i cant remember the last two numbers. (3007??). Im gonna shoot them tomorrow and see how they compare to the older magblends i have.

Well guys, I got to shoot today. The result weren't favorable, as far as the "new" hevi loads are concerned.  Here are the numbers at 40 yards from my SHE II and IC .665, with the 3.5 inch loads.

This years shells

7's from lot # 300524        185
6's from lot # 300756        130

2010 shells

7's from lot# 200514         266

Here are the nimbers I shot earlier this week with the JH .660

This years shells

7's from lot # 300524        189
6's from lot # 300756          99

2010 year shells

7's from lot # 300324        304
7's from lot # 200514        258
6's from lot # 300159        233

While the IC did shoot the new 6's and the old 7's a bit better, it shot the new 7's a bit less effectively. The Indian Creek patterns did seem to be more even than the ones from the Jelly Head though. However, in both cases, the shells from this year patterned dramatically worse than the shells from 2010. About 100 pellets less in both cases. Even 50 less would have been bad, but acceptable to me. 100 pellets less is rediculous. I think I'm going to try the Winchester ER and see how it does.

Good info. May help explain some of the baffling results some of us have gotten.

It'd be interesting to see one of each (good lot and bad lot) dissected to see if there are any obvious differences.

Those are disturbing results for sure.
What makes it much worse is the increased prices of Hevi-13. I got 190 in a 10" circle out of a 3.5-2.25-6 through my Mossy 835 and a SumToy .675 choke. I didn't look at the lot numbers, but I have multiple lot numbers, so I figure it's a crap shoot.
I will still take 190 in the 10 ring at 40 any day though.

Very true, could it be increased prices, equal increased demand, which equals decreased quality?

If they are selling them just as fast as they can make them, they probably don't see a need or have the time for quality control? Or just flat out do not care, because they are moving? I'd hate to think this ,but there's no other reason? Maybe if demand goes down, they will hear our cry, and quality would then go up?

The shells were disected last year and the culprit is a different wad.

This years shells (lot # 300514) gave me 271 with the 7's at 40 yds.

I did however notice a drop off with the current production of 6's.  Only got 163 and
I can do 179 with Winchester XRHD

If its just a bad wad can't we just pull them and replace them with a wad that works

Borden,

I'll help you and buy the new 7's off of you if you don't want them.  They work pretty good in the 535.  The patterns I posted here were from the new lot numbers.

That don't surprise me hevi said they were going to go back to the old wad they were using I guess they didn't. There still better than lead I don't know if the price justifies it or not...

I'm gonna hang onto them for now. They still shoot way better than any lead I've tried in my gun. That is unless the winchester ER patterns well. Then I'll probably sell the hevi, and stock up on the ER.
