Title: Lean Finely Textured Beef, aka "Pink Slime" in supermarket beef.
Post by: Lunchbox on March 08, 2012, 05:49:18 PM
I guess this kind of kills the "Why hunt when you can just buy meat from the Supermarket" argument huh? Enjoy your pink slime anti's.   :bike2:

Other than the other 2 million reasons i have, after reading this just reaffirms my pride in being a hunter. I KNOW what goes in my body(all the beef i buy is from a local farmer who operates a butcher shop on his farm).

Who ever is behind not getting this out of the industry, should be hung by the nads. It makes me want to projectile vomit. It's all about the almighty dollar, and how they can dilute the real beef product. Somebody has got to have the nerve to stop this, and whatever else they are forcing us to eat. Good Lord!!

Where's the beef?  This is only one of the reasons if I did not grow it,catch it ,or shoot it, my family doesn't  eat it. Sometimes it not a bad thing to be country.

I am trying to form a rational opinion on it, but it is difficult due to the omission of exactly what parts of the carcass are involved.  I suppose the industry explanation is that they may have used it in dogfood before because it had too much fat, now they remove the fat and the obstacle to use in food, and make better use of the carcass.

I'm trying to decide if it is really that much worse than what they put in hotdogs, bologna, potted meat, vienna sausages, processed lunch meat and loaf, etc.  This is another highly processed meat product.  (I don't each much of the foregoing processed products).

At a minimum, the govt should force them to disclose that they are using processed and reconstituted meat product in the ground beef and not let consumers operate on the assumption that it is freshly ground.

One of those news shows hit Food Lion hard back in about 1992 for pulling g.b. off the shelf that was at or approaching expiration and regrinding it with fresh meat.  Food Lion suffered, and one would think that the retailers would learn their lesson.

Not to be petty but the people to make this stuff stop is us, the american people, voters. As a few have already stated if I dont dont kill, grow it , catch I dont eat it. If we stop creating the supply by buying at the store and start getting it either from ourselves or from butchers/farmers whom we trust ( the little guy,my only source atm) We can stem the tide of these things but too many are to lazy and just want it right away with minimal work. I do what I can for now and when God allows my wife and I to move and have alarger garden etc.. we will do even more but for now the easiest way is to not eat out that much especially junk/fast food joints.

I agree wholeheartedly, except for the fact that you won't be growing beef in your new garden. Most of us don't raise our own.
It shouldn't get down to boycotting something that is less than formidable in our beef. Leave out the crap and charge me .25 cents more a pound.

I agree completely however I am also a realist, the almighty dollar controls the market and food retailers are going to do whatever they can to raise a buck. I cant raise the cows myself however I have found 1 or 2 place that will butcher a cow, I have purchased from a rancher so I know at least I am getting what I paid for and not something that I dont want, ie the Pink Slime
