Title: Decoys, some good some bad but which ones?
Post by: bdesanto16 on March 06, 2012, 04:40:42 PM
I have been trying to figure out should i spend a lot of money or just a couple bucks for a decoy set. They have some that are realistic and the have the blow up ones with a real shiny finish. I am looking for some advice from experience. All input would be nice good or bad.

Hard to beat a Dave Smith Decoy, the company is a sponsor on this site. I have been using one of their hen decoys for the last few years and every season I have hens come in and start pecking on it and the gobblers follow. I just order their strutting decoy this morning. They are well made and look realistic as heck. They are pricey compared to other decoys, but these will last several years and are very effective bring the birds in.

Well if I was going to spend the extra money, what would be a better bet the half strut jake or the full strut Tom?

Half Strut Jake !  Then you could go to the classifieds & buy the Upright hen that I have for sale & you would be good to go !   :icon_thumright:

sometimes the decision is left up to how you are going to use them, if you run & gun a lot, the best is a fold up decoy for convenience, if you are a field sitter, then the DSD is a good choice, i have several feather flex hens along with a B-mobile , the feather flex for run & gun, the Bmobile & some companions for the field days, no DSD for me, i'm cheap, but that remote control on the B-Mobile is a killer for them field gobblers, don't want me no string to have to worry about, sometimes the one in my vest is only a back rest

I have had luck with the montana decoys.  Light  and easy to carry if you like to run and gun.

If money is no option get the DSD decoys. If u want to save some bucks go to Walmart and buy whatever they have.
