Title: First Shots with 870 sm
Post by: MOOSE on March 04, 2012, 05:42:44 PM
I shot my first shots out of the box with my 870 sm and JH .665 while using Hevi-13 #6's. POA/POI was pretty solid, slightly low and to the left. I only shot from 30 yds at a 9 inch paper plate. I was getting around around 240-250 with my best being 261 in the plate.

I'm pretty new to turkey hunting, how do those numbers sound from 30 yds in a 9 inch circle???

Any tips to help improve numbers?

Overall I'm pretty pleased. Next weekend I'll move it back to 40 and see what I can do in a 10 inch circle.

Thanks!

Not sure if you cleaned it good first, but that would be a good idea. You will also want to shoot at a bigger piece of paper (30"X30"), so you can see the whole pattern to be sure of your POI. Also, shoot at 40 yards and then draw a 10" circle around the densest part of your pattern. Almost every shell out there looks good at 30, its crazy how much of a difference that 10 yards can make. It is also a better way to compare apples to apples, as this is what most here do.

Also, read the thread on barrel polishing. It can make a big difference.
