Gonna let my gf try and kill a turkey with my grandpas old topper and was wondering on what shell to start with?
i would go with the federal flight control shell in either 5's or 6's

I'd go with the Federal FCW #6. On a side note, if that is a Topper 88 single barrel your talking about letting your girlfriend shoot you might want to try another gun. I've got one and I swear Brian Urlacher doesn't hit as hard as that gun.

Thanks guys. It is a single barrel topper but its the 158 model not the 88. No slouch but alot easier on the shoulder than my 12. I let her shoot the 12 with dove loads and she complained so Idk what else to do. Cant afford a new gun right now.

I missed the part in the title about it being a 20 gauge. She won't feel that when she shoots a turkey. The 3" or 3.5" 12 gauge is a different story though.
Thanks guys

This may sound a little outside the box, but I would look for some good quality sporting clays loads with 1 oz of 7.5s. They will kick a lot less than the FCW 6s, and have a lot more pellets to fill out the pattern (350 vs 281). The 7.5s have plenty of energy to kill to 35 yds, and I doubt you will have the pattern beyond that with any lead shell.
X2. I took a kid huting a few years back with a brain tumor and he just couldn't handle anything in the recoil dept. like the 3" stuff. We picked up some of the Remington Premiere clays loads in 7.5 and his little youth 870 really put up some good numbers to about 25 yards. Never got a chance at a turkey but if he had, I have no doubts it woulda been lights out.

IMHO; whether 12ga or 20ga; Winchester® makes the best Pb turkey ammunition. For your 20ga H&R® Topper I would recommend..........
• Winchester® Supreme 3" Mag 1200fps 1 5/16oz #5 (STH2035).
I would have to make another vote for the Federal FC shells
you didnt say if it was full or mod. i got a 12 gauge turkey model h r that has a fixed full choke.it will roll a bird at 35 yards 40 is pushing it.thats with 3inch 2oz shot.i would limit shots to 30 yards with a topper 20 .imho 6s or 71/2 is the size to use at that range.

Don't be sorry Trevor; a FULL choke is what you want for Turkey hunting. Your 20ga single shot will do fine. Find the best patterning Pb load and you will be golden.
