I know this probably gets asked all the time around here, but i just got a Remington 870 for my birthday that shoots 3" shells. It came with a modified choke. What's yalls opinion on a good choke i should get for turkeys?
Sumtoy .650 did the best in my 870 and the jellyhead .665 was a close 2nd using hevi #6's.
I'm using IndianCreek .665
Remington Super Full!!!
It's more about good shells then a good choke. Get some 3" 2oz #6 or #7 Hevi13 shells. If money is no issue get a pure Gold or a Indian Creek choke. If you spent all your money on shells just get a cheap choke that can shoot Hevi shot. After some time at the range you should have a 40 yard gun.
The Jellyhead .660 and Remington barrels were made for each other. :icon_thumright:
Jelly Head .665 works great for me, better than the Rhino .660 I have.
Ssx.643 is what I'm shooting. I shot it with lead Sunday and got 110 in a 12" circle at 40 yards.
Pure Gold .670

Well it wasn't made for my 28" barrel. Neither was the Jelly Head .665.
I think Al is right about the Pure Gold .670 does seem to work very well in a lot of 870 barrels. I like mine. 40yd tape measured pattern flipped over so you can better see it. Hevi-13 3" 2oz #7's
And this was shot with the factory bead. That's deadnut.

Something that i have noticed and this could just be coincidence is that every Pure Gold .670 i have run in Rem 870's, Berettas, etc...I could have just shot the beads because the POI/POA stayed on. I have noticed the opposite with the Jelly Heads .660-.665. I have always had to use sights to get them lined up. Could just be the 8-10 guns i have run them in... but it does have me scratching my head.
Precise Machining
I shot two chokes in my 870... .665 Indian Creek, and the Jellyhead .665,
jelly head shot much better in my fun, using 3" hevi, #6 shot.

Then you definitely have a unique barrel!! :turkey2:
So far the jellyhead 665 isn't looking to good for me with magblend or 6s. I am having a time getting "good" patterns. My next step is a puregold. It worked exceptionally well in my other guns.
my jellyhead shoots about 8" to the left and factory chokes are dead on.

Not really. I have heard others that tried both Jelly Head chokes in their 870 barrel say the exact same thing.
i have 3 870's a 25'' a 21'' and a 28'', i have tried kicks, jelly head, tightwad, undertaker, tru glo, rem super full, and venilator and carlson, so far out of all 3 of my guns they shot the carlson and ventilator shot best, but mind you im a turkey hunter not paper puncher and i get at least 110-125 in a target at 40 yards, my next step will be sumtoy, he seems to work with everybody thats trys his choke from what i see on this sight to help them get thier goals,,,,,
but my opinion is worth nothing,,,,,,,,
For the money, the Rem Ventilator .655 is probably the best shooting choke out there. I paid $24 shipped to my door for this choke. That's an 11" x 11" turkey target. Neither Jelly Head choke would touch this in my barrel.

There was 282 shot in the 10" circle above. Now remember these are only 3" 2oz loads.
And the .675 MAD Super MAX is probably my best shooting choke that I have shot out of my 28" barrel. I originally counted this 10" at 319 shot but later revised it to 297 for the overlapping shot or the snowman pellets. I probably undescored it with this count. But it will shoot with the best of them. Not bad for a 3" 2oz load of #7's. Again the Jelly Head .665 choke did good to break the 200 mark in the 10" out of my barrel at 40yds. But to be honest the .665 Indian Creek did about the same as the Jelly Head. Once I went to a .669 Indian Creek, my patterns increased tremendously.

For the Mag Blends or 6's I'd go with the Pure Gold 670.
I Patterned the IC 665, jellyhead 665 and pure gold 670 in my 870 and the pure gold was the most consistent in the mag blends.
Now all those targets above and including this one below were shot with my open bead. My 870 shoots pretty much deadnut as you can tell.
Here's the Indian Creek .669. Now remember the Indian Creek .665 choke did good to break 200 in the 10" with the Hevi-13 2oz #7 loads. Just goes to show you what .004 can do to a pattern right there.

I assume this was shot with the shells that are not manufactured the same as they are now ? This was the run that got eveyone talking about Hevi 13. You may want to let people know that.
My Dad shoots an old Wingmaster 2 3/4" chamber only with H13 6s and a HeviShot choke and this setup has been the death of a bunch of turkeys.
I have a .665 Jellyhead that works fine. I am planning on eventually buying a Puregold and seeing which one shoots better.
