Title: Need a new turkey gun
Post by: MOOSE on February 26, 2012, 10:55:15 PM
I'm in the market for a new turkey gun. I was looking at a 887 bone collector edition with the 26 inch barrel but have seen a lot of bad reviews. I was also looking at a Stoeger p-350, or a Benelli SuperNova,  or an 835. Not looking to spend much more than about $550 in the gun itself.

I know a lot of people are big on the 870 but I can't find a new one in camo. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

You say you can't afford the 870 in camo. What about the standard 870 express wood stock? I would get the 870 express or an 835. Either would be a good choice.

Go to walmart or your local GS and snag a bare bones basic 835 and never look back. The choke selection is huge and the patterns are wicked.

If it were me, I would just buy both the 870 Express and the Moss 835.  You'll have all the shotgun you will ever need in each.

I went through a bunch of Turkey guns over the years 10ga - 20ga -Semi- single shot- pumps, etc. I've come back full circle and settled on 2 - 870 Rem 12ga is my primary and 20ga when I feel like it.

I just bought an 887 a few months ago, and so far I love that gun, I have had no problems.  If you do buy this gun, you have to make sure that the choke you buy will fit this gun.  For example forget buying any pattern master choke tubes, they will not fit this gun due to the polymer coating on the barrel.

For the past few years Dicks Sporting Goods has offered the 11-87 for around $500 for the day after thanksgiving...  make sure you have the DL updated and FFL is no problem (that took a few out of their ability to purchase at that price) and follow thru on rebates.  870s are good guns, I like the finish of the 887 but also had mixed reviews on that gun.  This time of year some slug guns can be picked up with the older thread in choke (rilfed choke) swap out for your turkey choke and canti is even better if using a red dot or scope.  Should be able to find something in your price range and still bag a spring bird.
