Title: who's going to try with a bow??
Post by: dirt road ninja on February 23, 2012, 11:17:35 AM
Anybody going to give it a go with the bow?

I saw Boomer had a pic with one. I might try later in the season if I can manage to get a couple with the shotgun. We put out a few ground blinds for kids to hunt out this year and they are all in primo spots. I don't think it would be to hard to deke one in to bow range.

I am planning on taking my bow some this year, my neighbor is an avid bowhunter and he has a turkey target I'm going to practice with.  Might even try it without the use of a pop up blind, this will only be after I have filled at least one tag with a shotgun though.  I also plan on carrying my old single shot a time or two, I've only killed one turkey with it and that was my first one.  It throws a good pattern out to 30 yards with 3" 6's.  I also want to put my Mossberg 500 back in service, I only used the full choke when I hunted with it but plan on getting a turkey choke for it.  I've bid on a couple of hastings chokes on ebay but keep getting outbid.  Thinking about the tru glo SSX for it also.

I am not a bowhunter.  Nothing against it, I have just never learned anything about it.  I have a few buddies that are getting on me about getting into it.  I will probably give it a go one of these days.  Good luck to those that give it a go this turkey season.

I hunt a few areas that are "Archery Only" on the WMAs; therefore, I will be toting the stick and string some. I plan on getting a tag on one opening morning with a shotty and then kicking back and enjoying the challenge of bow hunting them.

Last year ws my first year turkey hunting and I actually came very close on a few occassions to closing the deal with the bow....First time out I would have scored if it wasnt for the pack of 25 hogs that ran off the two toms that were coming in.

Might try on my 5th season tag depends on how the early part go's and if I draw a third tag, it's been a while  I think 2007 was the last time I shot one with a bow.

I'm a diehard bowhunter, but, opportunities on longbeards are hard to come by and far too valuable not to be packing a 3.5" 12 guage!!!

You are right about that, kill my first turkey with a bow took me four years it's a lot easier with 12 gauge.

Since Nebraska has a bow season that starts March 25 and gun dont start until April 14. I'll be out bowhunting just to get out there. There has been a couple years I was tagged out before gun season even started.

Same here, I haven't carried a gun deer hunting in years, but turkeys are another story!  I also don't like the thought of sitting in a blind.  I realize it can be done without the blind but that really hampers the on-the-fly strategical aspect of turkey hunting that I crave.

Now if I could get in the woods at an earlier date in a bow-only season, I most definitely would be packing the Elite!
