Gonna go my second year in se ks, and i went tbe first weekend last year which was a giant windy thunderstorm. i was told i went to early, as i never heard a gobble or saw a jake, but had 27 hens over two days walk by. i am only going to get one to two weekends so i am thinking about holding off till missouri is over and than heading out.
Independence Kansas here. Hunt all over SE Kansas.
I hunt se Kansas and sw Missouri every year. I go the second week of Missouri season, which is the last week in April. I think that is the best week. They seem to gobble good and not be as henned up
Good luck

I hunt just south of you near McCune and surrounding areas. I'm told this area had a decent hatch thsi year. Locals saw quite a few poults and lots of jakes this past fall while deer hunting.
Well thats good to hear. i am really excited to shoot my first ks turk this year
Kansas has a very long season. Usually till near the end of May. No need to rush. Weather gets better in May. I usually go the last 2 weeks, but the gobbling is better to me the First week of May. I hunt in North Central Kansas tho.
Good Luck
Nothing like those Kansas "roads" in the springtime.
Good Luck!

Yep. where we hunt, u need four wheel drive when it rains. Most roads are buckshot!!!
Last year killed me i could callbhens in from every direction, bot never saw a gob, i did however have a bearded hen trickle on to the dekes, so i used one tag at least
Birds are thick this year. Heading to southern ok, straight to Nebraska and then coming back to hammer them here. Leas if you have any problems let me know, we can hook up. You are not to far. I ordered the dsd flock and can't wait to hunt over them.

Agreed!!!
New to SE Kansas and looking forward to hunting this spring. I'm around the Cherokee area and have a few areas to hunt already.
Where is the Cherokee area to independence area?
Independence is about 45 minutes to an hour to the west of cherokee
I think everyone on this forum has killed a turkey or 30 in KS at some point or time.
I used to hunt Kansas extensively, mostly in the Fall River/Toronto area, but the massive spring flooding a half dozen years ago about wiped out the population. I hope the birds are rebounding, as those areas are relatively close to where I live, but haven't heard any reports. I never even made it out there last year, and hunted north-central KS the year before.
I'm heading out to the south-central part of the state this year. I haven't been there for about 5 years because of the economy. Hopefully there are as many birds as there were back then.
I love hunting SE Kansas! Birds are thick this year! My buddy killed a giant last year with 3 beards down on some public by Bighill Lake...Brshpile we should hook up, I'd give my left arm to hunt over a DSD flock!!!
:turkey2: i am freaking pumped, i will prob end up hunting public over my 500 ,acre of private unless the farmer has some patterned for me, lm the ground around him is wiha so it makes it nice
:newmascot: Ned lets do it. I have a ton of birds.
New to the forum and also from Independence, Ks as well. Can't wait for the season to begin.
speaking of the DSD flock i'm hoping my jake, standing hen, feeding hen, and the new edition of the strutting gobbler makes them SE Kansas birds come running. First year hunting them down in this part of kansas but looking forward to it. If anyone is close to me and wants to do some scouting or hunting get a hold of me!
I'm in Tulsa now but I got a house in Independence. Brshpile were ganna hit me up a bit....I have a feeling that 2012 is ganna be an awesome season. I'm ganna get my first mini slam this year and I've never been more excited about Turkey hunting.
Bulldog, where all u hunting at?
Be on public land Elk City
That unlicensed next to elk city lake last year was awesome..I killed 2 in there the last two years. A lot of public around there too!
:turkey2: NED
Im just not use to the wide open plains with small woods in ks. i got an idea where the roost and should have a better grasp on where to be when i go this year. i just had a bad weekend last year with the wheather. i drove for an hour and never even saw any in feilds that weekend
