Title: Which shell would you shoot?
Post by: Swamprunner on February 14, 2012, 09:35:00 PM
So, I am shooting an 870 super mag with an IC .665 and a 26" barrell. I got the following #'s and wonder what y'all would shoot. All are 10" numbers at 40

3" Nitro Mega 4/5/6/7 2 oz.     231

3.5" Win ext range 6 2 oz.       217

3.5" Nitro 7 hevi 2-7/16 oz.     358

3.5" Nitro 4/5/7 hevi 2-7/16.   313

3.5" hevi 7 2-1/4 oz.               327

Opinions and reasoning please

This one. That's one hard hitting round at 40 yards, turkey don't stand a chance. :icon_thumright:

Depends on your hunting situation and what the actual patterns look like.  A laser tight pattern, with big numbers isn't going to do you any good when the bird comes in at 15-25 yards....you would be shooting a rifle at him at that point.

I nice even pattern with no holes that is tight enough to get it done at 40-50 yards AND is also wide enough at 20-25 to allow for a small bit of error.

Nitro #7s
Looks like you have a good lot of the hevi13 #7s. Who knows what kind of numbers you will get from the next box. That's why I vote the Nitros.

Probably the Nitro 7's, but in all honesty if I could consistently throw 200+ with the Win Xtended Range 6's it would be hard to turn away from that.  That would be a mean mocheen!

If it were me I would flip a coin and pick one of those.

Depends on your 20" ring and 50 yard numbers.  I bet the Winchester Xtended range will surprise you at 50 yards.  I vote will likely be the Hevi 13 #7s tho
What lot # on the Hevi 13 2.25oz #7s?

None of the above.

The 2 7/16's loads are most often too much shot packed into the narrow bore of a .727 Remington.

I'd either go with a 5x6x7
Nitro triplex in a 2 1/4 ounce load or I would shoot hevi13 6s in tje 2.25 ounce load.

I'd start with best one (assuming all of the patterns have nice, even coverage) and shoot 'em all down the list from there.  And then when I run out, I'd buy more of the least expensive ones at that time, because ain't no turkey gonna be walking away from ANY of those.

Great setup. i've got the same one and it is comparable with your gun. I have also shot the same loads and i made my decision on the evenness of the pattern including the 20 inch, i love big 10 numbers but for a 'hunting' pattern i went with the Hevi 13 with 2.25 oz of #7s. I used Nitro for years and no complaints here. Every shell you posted is a killer and you could flip a coin and have a winner. We've come a long way with ammo and bead sights sometimes are not precise enough for me up close to not miss due to slight flinch or raising my head a bit...I'm a FastFire or Turkey Scope guy now, just gotta squeeze easy....lol...

2-1/4 oz in 12 and 2-1/2 in 10.  I shot the heavier H517 nitro for a couple years, The lighter 51013 2-1/4 oz was much more efficient on hits. Just took a several patterning sessions and dead turkeys to be honest about it,.  :icon_thumright:

The 21/4oz.  Hevi-13, 7's.  Dead is dead on a turkey and the "lighter" load
is easier on you physically and monetarily.

I would go with the Nitro 4,5,7's I think. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of any of them

Any one of those would work just fine at 40.   Should be able to stretch a little more yardage out of all too.

Hal, this is all a moot point when I come to see you on 3/11, if you have shot and are available.

Now, to my thoughts and motives. My motivation when choosing a shell is not a 35 yard shot. They all kill at 35. I want to know what happens when I judge a turkey to be 42 yards, and it turns out he was 50. I do not trust hevi 7's or the nitro hevi 7.5's at 50 yards. I do trust the ex range 6's, but I do not trust those numbers at 50. I think I am going to order the 3.5" 2-1/4 oz megas. That will be a great load after I run out of the TSS that I hope to be loading up.  I hope to shoot all my birds at 30 yards, but we all know that 30 yards shots are not the reason for this forum.  Thank you all for your input.

Nitro #7s if money is no object.

The only advantage of the duplex loads are to make them legal in some states that don't allow straight 7's for turkey. Well that and to ease the mind of some hunters that feel like they need something bigger than 7's in a shell. It's the 7's in those loads that are doing the killing however. At the speeds those Nitros launch the 7's will kill turkeys like cyanide.
