Title: WTB 16 gauge turkey ammo
Post by: Borden811 on February 14, 2012, 06:21:03 PM
Looking for any kind of 16 gauge ammo I can use for turkeys. I'm going to be shooting it in a winchester model 12. Lead, bismuth, hevishot, etc. Anything you don't want that I can pattern. I'm trying to avoid spending a ton of money on boxes of 25 shells, just to see what works. 2 3/4 inch 4's 5's or 6's any brand, preferrably high brass, with 1 1/8(or larger if they make them) payload. Let me know what ya have!

Borden,  The highest payload offered in a 16 gauge is what you typed.  1 and 1/8 is as heavy as it gets.  My father is a sixteen fanatic and he's killed several birds with his Ithica 37 pump shooting Federal Premium #6s.  The Federals are copper plated.  Dont quote me on this, but Fiochi or Kent or someone makes a phesant load thats loaded with Nickel Plated shot that would fit the bill as well.  The only HTL load on the market for a 16 is made by Envirometal and its called Classic Doubles, but for a box of 10 your looking at over 20 bucks.  Hope this helped.

Hevi-Shot Duck comes in a 16ga load that gives you the choice of #4 or #6 in a higher velocity than Classic Doubles. These are powerhouse loads for the 16. I shoot them out of my Ithaca 37 all the time. Under 30yds with a mod choke, will equal a very dead turkey

I know environmetel makes a duck load that is 1 1/4 ounce, and I believe fedaral makes a wing shock mag load in 1 1/4 oz. I'm planning on trying them both, but was hoping I could find a few guys with some extras laying around, before I spent 30.00 on a box of the federals, or 40.00 on box of the hevis. I'd have no problem spending that much, if I knew they would pattern good. I did find the duck loads for 24.00 dollars on sale, but shipping was 17 dollars, so that pretty much cancelled any savings on that, lol. Fiocchi makes the nickel plated shot.  Thanks for the help guys, I guess I'll just bite the bullet and buy a few boxes of stuff, and start patterning.

The plated Golden Pheasant load by Fiocchi is a very solid choice. It may be just the ticket. Plus you get lots to pattern with. Keep your eyes peeled for the Hevi Duck in the meantime. You'll feel like you are behind the wheel of a Ferrari when you have one of those babies in the chamber  :D

Lol, I just ordered a box of 10 for 24.00. I'm picking up some other stuff from the local gun shop. Keep your eyes peeled, I'll be postiing pattern pics and whatnot from all the stuff I test in the next few weeks, when the ammo arrives, and the weather warms up a bit.
