I was doing some research ,going through my journal, and it looks like I have killed over 65% of my birds mid to late morning , and was just wondering what you consider your witching hour ?
Here lately it has been afternoons for me. My last five birds have all been in the afternoon.
Late Morn -Noon. All four of the birds I killed were after 10:00am.
I have killed birds from 6am to 1145am but the majority were taken mid-morning 8am to 10am.
Probably mid-morning (8:00 to 10:00)
8:00 - 9:30. for me.
Without a doubt 10:00 to about 1:00! It maybe harder to find one willing to work, but when you do he will usually run in! They are lonely and looking for ladies at that time.
I do love the daylight to about 9:00 time just for the number of gobbles you can hear and it is nice to pull one right off the roost and be out of the woods early. But, early is when the hens are with them and the other hunters are out.
A couple haurs after daylight is my favorite, but the kills run about the same at all hours.
Most of have been within an hour of flydown.
Mid to late morning is killing time for me.
I have killed over half my birds fling down off the roost into my lap. About 25% around lunch that I have worked all morning and 25% right before fly up.
Mostly afternoons for me, but that's usually because I only have a total of 1hr to hunt before I have to go to work in the mornings.....still have to get out and hear all the gobbling though!
So, I think I can remember, Since I only have 6 thus far
2009 - 0730
2010 - 1230, 1030, 0625
2011 - 0730, 0615, (son's at 0830)
So I like the 1-2 hrs right after fly down. With deer 9-11 is my favorite time to be out
Most of my luck is after 0900. Every year I wonder why I try to hunt roost birds but I just can't miss out on fly down time!

I hear ya! There is just something about being out there at first light and hearing the woods wake up that makes it worth being out, even if I hardly ever kill one at flydown!
Mid morning
:smiley-patriotic-flagwaver-an Voted..I've had some at fly down, some early morning. But .. most came in the late morning. I would say between 10 and noon has been the best time for me. I've had a few buzzer beaters over the years ;D
9-10 for me
I have killed most of mine before 9am but have killed several late in the evening. Right before fly up.
Probably 80% are killed within the first half hour after flydown. Last 5 of 6 have been by 6;30. Hunt every morning before work and I punch in at 7:00.
Roy
Most of my kills are before 10 but that's probably because I hunt a lot before work.
It has some to do with the breeding cycle. I usually kill mine from 9 to 11;30 during the breding cycle. late in the season any time of day.
Depends on what phase of the season it is; early in the season it is more in the morning and later in the season it tends to be closer to noon.
If I can get a turkey to answer me afternoon, I have a STRONG chance of calling him in. More than 50% of the birds I kill are afternoon.
A close second would be mid morning.
Still can't figure out how guys consistently kill turkeys right off the roost in the morning. That always seems to be a big crap shoot for me...
Better for me @ Fly Down! They seem more anxious.
75% right off the roost
15% between 645 and 730 on the second set up
10% between 730 and 945
I've never killed one after 10am
I have the best luck about an hour after flydown
Mid to late morning for me... usually between 9 and 11
I've killed most of my birds before 7 and most of those were within 10 minutes of there toes touching the earth for the last time ! :fud: :OGani:
I've killed most of my birds within an hour or so of flydown but I have also had excellent luck from 10-12
Love to hear them gobble in the tree.
Fly down time until about 11
Kill most of my birds within a minute of being on the ground to an hour after.. have 2 that I killed around 10-11am
our hunting is done at 12 (noon) and I've left plenty of birds gobbling in the woods
Majority have been from 9-1030. 2010 was a rare year where we stomped most of em just right after fly down.
10:30 -2:00 is a good time to find a lonely bird.
8ish
seems like around bed time I usually get lucky
Mid morning
It's about 50/50 for me between the early morning and late. However i notice i have a low percentage of kills in the 8 am to 9 30 window. Most are later after ten am or very early after flydown. Not 100 % certain but I suspect my number one time for kills is the 630 to 730 window.

Yep, but there's a narrow window between the time the sun goes down and when they go to sleep.... They also get wise to your tricks and become more elusive with age.
I've found that a little strutting helps, and if need be, I can always rely on some wine.
I've killed a few 1st hour after fly-down but most have been between 8-11.
8 - 11
Between 7:30-10
8am till 9:30am has been the most productive for me
mid morning all the way
A majority of you state mid-morning and many around noon.. can someone tell me why so many set up at ungodly hours (well before sunrise) if you're getting a good chunk of your birds well after sunrise??
Thanks..
Is ee them very active in late afternoon too.. I shot my first ever bird at 6:45 PM

Because you cant kill them if you arent out there and plenty of birds get killed at any given time of day.
Also, they are more vocal early in the mornings right off the roost so it's easier to locate them and then hang with them in that area so that, later in the day, if you arent able to kill them right after they fly down you are within their area already and (hopefully you have a good idea of exactly where they are) can engage them once their hens leave or their mood changes.
I've killed more birds from 2 pm - 7 pm.
My favorite time is when that first gobble sounds at the crack of dawn, because I'm so excited to just be out there. I've had the most luck 1 - 3 hours after daylight though. If I had more sense I would hunt less aggressively that first hour during flydown.

Me too! Almost all of my birds have been late afternoon and evening.
(Est.) 45% Flydown to 8:00 a.m. with (50% of the 45% being within 15 min. after they fly down.
50% 8:00a.m. to 11:00a.m. and
5% from 11:00a.m. to 12 or 1:00 p.m.
This is hunting WV and VA. the 2 states I hunt the most.
Other states I have no idea.
Flydown till 8:00
Hard to strike a gobbler in PA. after 8:00, anymore......
mid morn
I love getting out there very early.. last year I was done at 5:45 am the previous year 6:15 am..... them are my earliest birds... can't hunt in Illinois after 1 pm .. and I need all the time i can get..
Ive seen 5 shot this season before 640am.
Aggressive, close proximity roost setups are lethal if you know how to implement them.
I shot one at 745am this week. That's the latest I've seen one die this year.
Great thread.
I've killed must of my birds between 8 and 11.
