Title: Time to find a new place to hunt :(
Post by: TheTwistedOne on February 14, 2012, 11:04:04 AM
Just found out the place I have been hunting the last 10+ years has leased the hunting rights out.

Times are tough for everyone.  They can't afford not to lease it.  I'm not mad at the landowners, I'm just sad.  I'm gonna miss hunting there.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who is gonna loose a place to go this year.

The coal company is putting  a huge water treatment plant right where I have hunted the past 10 years.  I had to go through 3 locked gates to get on the hill.  It was great having the spring woods to myself.  Jobs are more important so I will look for another spot.  Plus, I may still be able to walk into the back side.

I've lost a few places over the years and it hurts but sometimes it gets you out looking and you find a better place. Keep your chin up.

I bought a 3 1/2 acre hunt camp that was less than one mile from a WMA owned by a paper company. Not long after they pulled the property from the system and it is now a private lease...sucks big time.

It is sad to say, but the old saying "money talks, and BS walks" is certainly true. I'm thankful to have some good friends that own land on which I can hunt, plus, we are fortunate here in MO in that there is quite a lot of public owned land.

I have a small piece of property in n. Florida with 500 additional acres next door that we fall hunt on and some smaller properties in central Florida that are owned by friends.I hunted public land for a change last year and secured a good bird the 2nd. morning after a roost shooter wanted a bird worse than I did opening morning(the problem with Florida public lands).never was able to even hunt my private land last Spring when I limited out early and headed to New Mexico.

Would hate to loose my private places in central Florida.just the thought of having a backup is good when the rookies are running rampant and you need some peace of mind.

One thing that has always helped me is I own my own Airconditioning company and landowners are always wanting to make a deal for me to hunt their lands they have in other counties.have to much on my plate and Florida only allows two fall and two Spring birds so the majority of time I have to give them a pass.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                You may be able to lend a service to a land owner and get your foot in the door that way.sure hope it works out for you.it has to be disappointing I'm sure right here before the season start.

Rumor is we are losing our lease of 2000 acres next year, so I have already started calling around offering to lease from people who only deer hunt. One guy that has let me hunt his property before as long as he was with me told me I had the sole rights on his 800 acres from March 1 to May 1. Gave me two weeks to scout on the front end. Stopped by to see him and say thanks and he handed me a notarized permit saying I had the rights for as long as he owned the property.

You never know until you ask!
