Title: Old School Turkey Loads
Post by: MossRem on February 13, 2012, 06:53:31 PM
Today, we have a lot of choices with regard to turkey loads and chokes.
How about 60 years ago...around the time my Granddaddy Smith and his brother in law Joe bagged their turkey? Here was your selection back in good old 1952...
Chokes: fixed factory full or modified. Or you could have a Poly-Choke put on your gun.
Loads: What'll it be? 4s or 6s? 2 and 3/4, or 3 inch? That's all there was unless you loaded your own shells.
Brands: Remington and Winchester. Don't know if Federal was even putting out shotgun shells back then.
I would have to believe that Granddad and Joe are probably up there in heaven, having a good laugh at our expense...mainly, at the "expense" of all the spending we do on turkey gear!
They hunted in detective hats and overalls they probably worked in that day. They made their own cedar box calls. Both had double barrel shotguns, most likely with 2 and 3/4 chambers.

They called it close, and they killed it dead. That about sums it up.

I almost forgot to mention Peters shotshells....Remington with a blue hull! LOL
My father used to hunt quail. He always used to like Peters high base 16 gauge shells because he thought they hit harder than Remington or Winchester. Hated to break the news to him! :D

I remember when I started hunting in the early 80's and I thought the Remington buffered Nitro Mags were the cats meow for turkeys....and they came 25 shells to a box!

I have some old Rem Duplex 3" BB and #4. IMO they would make Coyote loads. Not legal here anymore for Turkeys.
