Went searching around the forum and couldn't see that anybody has discussed this subject, but I called both the folks at Hevi-Shot and at Carlson's Chokes regarding if I could shoot the new Hevi-Metal Turkey loads out of the Hevi-13 Turkey Choke (I called because on the choke, its says don't shoot steel pellets, but on the Hevi-Shot website, it says don't shoot steel pellets larger than BB's or faster than 1550 fps...so I wanted to make sure.)
I called Hevi-Shot, and the lady says yes, the Hevi-Metal Turkey loads can be shot out of a Hevi-13 Turkey choke.
Unsure of her answer, I called Carlson's Chokes, and asked the sales guy there. He said, "Under no circumstances should steel, including Hevi-Metal Turkey Loads, should be shot out of a Hevi-13 Turkey choke."
Wow, two completely different answers...but I am going to trust the folks that actually made the choke. The person I spoke with at Carlson's Chokes said he didn't even know about the Hevi-Metal Turkey Loads until he saw them at the SHOT show a couple of weeks ago. He asked the Hevi-Shot folks if they are telling people they can shoot the Hevi-Metal loads out of the Hevi-13 choke, and he said they were telling people it was "ok" to do. The guy at Carlson's said they have never tested the Hevi-Metal loads.
I threw this out there because I wasn't sure if other people had the same questions.
seriously not meaning this in a rude way but why in the world would you WANT to shoot the hevi metal loads?
Was going to give them a try at the range just to see how they pattern. I like faster rounds. I am just making the switch to hevi-shot loads this year and I am going to pattern a bunch of stuff. A couple of buddies and I went and bought different loads to pattern (we split the bill) and I wanted to make sure it could go through my gun ok. I am using a new gun, new choke, and new loads this year so I was open to anything. I am just glad I made the call beforehand.
i gotcha and sounds like fun, it will prob save you some money in the end though...i have a hard time seeing how they would even give a good pattern much less be a good idea to even shoot STEEL at turkeys.
I agree with the steel part. I am excited though about the season coming up. I have been seeing large flocks of hens and gobblers on our lease. I am not much of a deer hunter, but every time I went, I saw at least 10 turkeys...hopefully they stay around.
But I just threw that post up there in case other people had the same question. Its odd that they make a turkey load that can't be shot out of their turkey choke. I would have to have learned the hard way...
Good luck this season!
That load won't be on the market long. Only 1.5oz of shot in the 3.5" load with mixed #4 steel and #6 hevi. I see they are advertising it for "called-in toms." If a man wants a close range load plain ol' gray box Winchester #6 lead will fit the bill for 75 cents per shell. :TrainWreck1:
Swing by the Hevi-shot Forum and look up the threads on Hevi Metal Turkey. There's one specific to the choke selection there under the Hevi-Shot Chokes thread.
big waste of money

Exactly what I was thinking.
