Title: Patterned some 2012 nitro mega weights today
Post by: wingbonehntr on February 07, 2012, 05:14:04 PM
I patterned the new nitro mega weights out of my browning silver with 24" pipe at a ranged 40 yds. Temp was 70 deg with little wind. The load was the m517. 3.5" 2-7/16 oz 4x5x6x7

Rhino 670         225 hits in the 10
Pure gold 670.   242 hits
Indian creek. 675    180
  This is the shell that nitro recommends , but with the Indian creek 665.

And if it was only 6x7 duplex. Those 4-5's are just taking up room

Call me crazy, but those numbers hardly justify the cost.

I talked to Ray for a while about it.  He said the 4's and 5's held the pattern together. They couldn't get a pattern with 6's, 7's or 6x7's. I would like to see some numbers in the 2-1/4 oz load.

He also said that every year the g/cc of the hevi he has received has gotten lower. Said some were down to 11.

Ouch!  This is quite disheartening.

Don't really see these as an upgrade either

Are the Hevi 13's and other shells receiving the same Hevi Shot as Nitro? Are the all experiencing lower densities or is this just a Nitro problem?

They told me the same thing about 4's and 5's holding the pattern together. They did admit the reason they don't want to load straight 7's is they pay to have them ground down from 6's and it would be too expensive. They talked like they might load 6x7's for me.

The 2-7/16 oz load Hevi load was incredible with some guns.

Yep. I have been shooting those 2-7/16 hevis out of my SBE2 with lots of carnage

I used to get some high numbers out of a Beretta Xtrema 2/ Primos JH .660 and the 2.25  4X5X7's.  The shells seemed to be creating too much pressure and the cost wasn't justified when i could pay half as much and turn higher numbers with Hevi 7's.  There is one thing i will say for the the Nitro guys..they have done the homework and if they suggest a choke it is generally right on the money.

I think the problem with the numbers is that the 4's and 5's are taking up too much room

If ya don't mind, could you count total hits on paper?  Id like to have an idea of total pellet count in that load.  Nominally 500-545 in the hevi blends I believe.

I totally agree with longsharks statement ...the hevi has s higher pellet count, and consistentlt throws denser patterns and is cheaper, not sire by how much this year,  ut still cheaper.  I think this is only gonna help hevi and federal this time......

Also, when did the start advertising /testing indian creek?  I have the jh and rhino and another 698 to shoot nitros, but didn't know ic made a 695 until my talk with nitro.  Never tried one if their chokes before.

I will count and post the total number of shot on paper this morning.
I would like to see what this load would do without the 4s and 5s. My backboard was  a new sheet of 1/2" osb. This stuff is really hard and at 40 yds I had a bunch of pass thru's. I know it was those 4s and 5s, he'll you could probably kill deer with those things. No need for that to kill a turkey.

with this being said. should i back up on my order for megas and go with their straight 7s for 12 and 20ga.? is there going to be a huge difference from h13 7 vs. nitros straight 7s.
thanks

Swampfox....I wonder the same, but with the patterns im getting out if hevi 7s I don't see a need to change, but again, curiosity kills me.  I know several here shoot straight nitro 7s with great patterns.  Maybe ask around...id live to hear how they did with them last year,  cause that is likely how they are this year.  The fps will be higher than hevi.
also I would stick with the straight 7 for the 20

thanks for the info. slicky!think im gonna redo my order and go with some straights. also interesting is 2 1\4 vs. 2 7\16. i have an ssi-1 with big bore im wanting to experiment with. would it be worth it to try the 2 7\16 out of it or stay with 2 1\4 as everthing else i run is 870.

I counted 2 targets and had 505 shot in each.

Swamp...I've shot the 2 7/16 loads for years..on paper and in the woods.  Never got anything impressive in paper, but lots of dead turkeys.  The 2 1/4 oz loads have yielded the better paper results and still a lot of dead birds too.  However, the 2 1/4 loads have a time ejecting in one gun

Check out a video I just put up in the video section.  40 yard shot with the 2 7/16 load.

Never know where you'll have to set up to kill birds sometimes. :laugh: Fountain wasn't letting that bird get close enough to see he wasn't wearing his tomato camo.

This is a selling gimmick, to get folks to buy the blends, he tells that to everyone that he talks to. However real world results are comepletely opposite.

Also, their are several handloaders here, including myself, that have always gotten higher numbers with straight 7s or 6s vs a blend. Blends can be modified to show higher numbers by adjusting your portions, but they will never compare to the numbers you get with straight smaller shot. Also it is a fib that the #4s and #5s stay tight in the pattern, they are the first pellets to leave the core of the pattern.

Also, the 2 1/4 oz load will out pattern the 2 7/16 oz load every day of the week, and twice on sunday, in 95% of guns because of the bore diameter. The only one it has the potential to shine in, is the 835 and 935 because of the larger bore diameter.

Why would he not just offer the 7's?  That would be perfect.

They do not offer straight 7's because the shot only comes in 2, 4, & 6. They pay to have the 4's and 6's ground down to 5's and 7's. It would cost too much to load straight 7's by their explanation.

thanks guys, that shows that numbers are nice but not necessary.  i think i was only getting around 250 on paper, but suffecient to kill by all means.  i still take the 2.25 oz loads for my guns.

If that's the case why couldn't they load up some straight #6's? They wouldn't need to have them ground down and a straight #6 load should put up better numbers than 4x5x6x7.

Straight 6's would be nasty. I also want to see #'s from 2-1/4 oz loads

I think I have them talked in to loading me some 6x7's and I bet they would load straight 6's.

I just got off the phone with that new girl they have over there. The bottom line is, I don't think they are going to load any 6/7's. Not for me anyway. I had ordered some 3" a couple of weeks back, and they patterned great. So, I think I am going to try the 3.5" 2-1/4 oz megas.

Here is the pellet count per oz
4= 118
5= 132
6= 201
7= 272

Frustrating they won't load duplex..... If nitro begins to force people to shoot loads they arent requesting I see consequences amongst their customer following.

I'm really disappointed to hear this.  I was going to have 25 megaweight duplex loaded after I burned up the rest of my 510c this spring.
