Title: Setting up 870
Post by: chrmayo on January 26, 2012, 08:39:07 PM
Needing a choke for my 870 SM. Was set on getting the JH .660 and shooting hevi 7s. Should I try something else?

What ever happened to people talking up the SSX choke. How does it perform in the 870s? Seems to be an odd constriction. .643

I use a 665 Jellyhead on a 24" barrel on my 870.

I just sold my .665 jh. I have a 25" barrel on my gun and I have a 21" barrel also. I wish I could get the 21 to shoot good and I would use it.

It's an excellent turkey choke. I shoot that choke in several Remington shotguns with both #6 and #7 Hevi-13 shotshells with great results both on the still target field and in the turkey woods.

The exit diameter is, as you know, just a part of the equation. It's really more about the internal geometry of the choke and the SSX has great "internals".

Thanks,
Clark

870 with a JH .660 and straight 7s is tough to beat. Mine will shoot 320 to 330 in a 10 inch at 40.

I use a jellyhead.660 in mine with H-13 #6 and get upper 190's. I haven't tried the 7's mainly because the 6's shoot so good, but i would imagine that they'll only put up higher number's.
