Title: Shotgun Slugs For Turkeys in NC???
Post by: maustypsu on January 12, 2012, 10:22:57 AM
OK, now that I got your attention and the hair on the back of your neck is standing up...  no, I don't plan to do this.

I was reading thru the Hunting Regulation Digest for NC and found this as the only line in the regulation book that addresses weapons used for turkey hunting.

It is unlawful to:
? Use pistols, rifles or muzzleloading rifles to hunt wild turkey.

This is in the general section:
? Shotguns must be no larger than 10-gauge.

I'm sure shot size has to be covered somewhere in the book but not sure where.  The way this is written I could use slugs, buckshot, steel 7 shot, etc.  I hope that isn't the case because if you can, someone will!

Anyone know where this is covered in the book or what shot sizes are legal in NC?  I loaded up on some #7's and wanted to make sure they were legal before the game warden told me so with a $500 thank you note.

I've always said that the ultimate load to get a guaranteed 100% pattern inside of a 3" circle is with a slug. Retains enough foot/pounds of energy to drop one out to 100+ yards.

We, as shooters, seem too eager to display our obsession with having the tightest pattern at 40 yards. According to this criteria, slugs beat all. The worst thing to happen to field birds.  ::)

Cheers  :o

Maybe worth a call to our local warden since he would be the one potentially writing any tickets.

Sweet!  I just got a SlugHunter scope for my 870.  I think the BDC reticles take it out to 250 yards.  I guess I won't need to worry about calls, camo, my gobbler lounger or locators this year.

That's just silly...you'll still want the gobbler lounger.   :D

I have never seen shot size covered in the book. I hunt with #7's and have never had a problem.....cant say I have ever seen a warden either.

Slugs and buckshot have no business in the turkey woods

I lost someone very close to me just over 20 years ago this way - happened right in front of me , some idiot shot at the sound of a turkey - A slug hit him right in the face -

The bottom line is that you cannot underestimate the stupidity of idiots with guns

Yeah, that's my concern.  If you can use them, somebody is.  This is the first state that I've hunted in that didn't spell out very clearly at least the maximum shot size.

What happened to your friend was terrible, so sorry to hear about that.  This is somewhere that we as sportsmen need to step up and request the rule change/clarity in all states.

That kind of mess really tees me off.
