Just trying to get other opinions regarding glass vs slate surfaced pot calls. I am thinking about getting a new pot call for my arsenal and I currently carry 2 glass calls. Any pros or cons regarding the 2 different surfaces. I am considering a crystal misstress or a Cody woodsman. I normally use a rosewood or purple heart striker.

I would suggest trying a copper call. Copper will give you a distinctly different sound from the glass and sometimes thats all it takes to get those longbeards moving.

I never considered copper. I hunt public land and a different sound is always good ! What type of striker runs well on copper ?

I don't know that you would want to run an aluminum striker on copper but any wood could work. Just depends what you want to get out of it.
If you already carry two glass pots and no slate calls, then I would get a slate. But that's a generalization. I had a glass call with a very 'beefy' striker made of a soft wood that would purr like a kitten. So surface alone isn't the whole equation.
A good copper call will run well with just about any striker.
I like Bocote, Tigerwood, Zebrawood, Bubinga just to name a few.

One big difference in slate and glass is ease of conditioning. Just a few swipes with a Scotchbrite pad and you are good to go. Whereas with glass/crystal, its going to take a few more passes and I generally use 150 grit sandpaper for that. Copper I use the green Scotchbrite and that is the only surface that when I condition it, I actually swirl the pad around on the call. All other surfaces I push the sandpaper/Scotchbrite in ONE direction only.
I like padauk and jatoba on copper as far as woods. But if you get a chance, get with carp on here and get one of his goose wingbone strikers. That thing flat runs on every surface you can imagine
Misfire thanks for adding how you condition the copper, thought somewhere i saw use sand paper... i had been using a scotchbrite also?? Cant add anything that hadnt been said except maybe try a doublesided glass over slate call. It could give you the best of both worlds in one call. Just a suggestion. I am in the process of figuring out copper right now ... want to carry one of those this spring for sure!
