Would you worry at all about letting your child shoot turkeys with this set up?
So I just couldn't wait. Shooting Rem 870 express 20. 22" barrel with RSF .570 shoke. Fed HW 1.5 oz of #7. All at 40 yds
Second shot was through the dirtiest barrel. Temps were 30 degrees as well. I think with a little dirty barrel and warmer temps, I'll be fine. This is my son's gun, I have no plans having him shooting past 40 yds. I would have liked to have had about 110, but I am happy with the last 2. Plenty of room for error in closer. What do you think?
Shot #1 57

I think that should be fine for your son. That second target is about how that choke shot through my gun.

I want it open, I think the 30 degree temps and getting the barrel as clean as I could before the first shot (after shooting a target load at 10 yds to check if close to being on) and after the second may have brought it down a little. But I'm good with this and confident if his aim is on he will kill one.
#2 looks good especially for a cold day.
Thanks, That is the exact combo I am going to try when I get to the range.
What effect does clean/dirty barrel have on the pattern? I haven't heard that before.
looks good
Good looking pattern there, good luck to you both.

It all really depends on your gun. My MB 835 really likes a clean barrel for best pattern numbers. From memory, seems the Remys like a little dirty barrel, i.e. after 2-3 shots getting the best numbers. This may be wrong, and hopefully others with Rem experience will chime in.
I am surprised by the difference between 1st and 2nd shot.
57 vs 101 ..... doesnt make sense if it is only related to dirty barrel.
great shootin... :you_rock: that is exactly what setup mywifes gun is..going to do a deep clean and polish and c if we can get in the 180's :z-guntootsmiley:..heard its possible with this gun/load/choke combo..also i was under the impression the fed hw likes a squeaky clean barrel..those flight control wads can b finniky just what i heard :smiley-patriotic-flagwaver-an
the 101 looks great.
Do you have any idea as to why the first shot was only 57 hits?

I have no idea. I had shot once at 10 yds to check POI/POA. I had polished the barrel and don't have a bore snake in 20 gauge. I tried to brush out with just the rod and brush. Other than that I don't know.
any of them will work just fine
just to get the new question to the top

I'd have two concerns.
1.5 oz is a pretty heavy load for a small kid to shoot. Also, why not just load him up a cusom TSS load? You can slow it down and lighten it up and still end up with a better turkey killing pattern to boot. That's the beauty of rolling your own....
I know Hal this is the first thing I thought of when evaluating these patterns, but I have been getting a lot of grief from the wife about my TSS habit. I would get another press and components and right now she just ain't letting that happen. This was the best way I could get through this first season, then move on to the TSS hopefully next year. I have quite a bit of #9 that is waiting. I have been resisting the temptation to load up some 9x8 loads, just to save them for the 20 gauge. I do not like roll crimping, didn't do well with the .410 loads. I am getting a knoxx stock to put on as well, so when he shoots at a turkey, I don't think he will mind much.
Just a thought...you might also want to check on the other part of the formula.
As you know, the lead 7s are lighter than lead 6s (which are lighter than 5s, etc, etc).
Now that you know the 7s 'pattern' well at 40yds...might be worthwhile to make sure you know if they'll break a neck or skull at that distance.
A few sturdy tuna or soup cans (not flimsy pepsi cans of course) set up at 25/30/35/40 yards for penetation tests will tell you quickly the max yardage those lead 7's will penetrate.
I am shooting the 1.5 oz of Federal heavyweight (15g/cc) #7. This is not lead (10.6 g/cc) much more dense and packs a lot more energy and it will break bones well past 50 yds.

Didn't know that...reason I mentioned it was because I had to use nickel plated lead 7s just this past spring as my normal turkey gun was out of commission...used them in an IC choked barrel to fill in the pattern better...learned that 25 yards was my safe max and couldn't imagine them penetrating at 40 yards (took my shot at 22 yards).
That will surely give them a permanent dirt nap.
