Title: Turkeys gobbling their heads off but won't respond to your calling...
Post by: panolaproductions on December 26, 2011, 10:15:14 PM
I'm editing some footage from the last couple years and have noticed a couple times that we will have a bird gobbling every 3-5 seconds it seems like at everything in the woods but then shuts up immediately for the moments following our calls whether it be clucks, purrs, yelps, etc. What could be the reasoning for this and what tips do you guys have for this situation? Alabama birds btw...

Couldn't really be turkeys that your hearing because we all know there are no turkeys in Bama.  Now if it was some other state I'd say your probably hearing satelite gobblers a lot of times.  They tend to be vocal until they hear another bird, then they go into stealth mode until they get a visual on the other bird or birds.  Even then they may remain silent.  There are exceptions for sure, but more times than not when I encounter a bird like you describe and I'm fortunate enough to lay eye's on him he turns out to be a loner.
