Title: Sharpening lathe chisels
Post by: kenturkey89 on December 26, 2011, 04:06:11 PM
Can any of you please tell me what brands of grinders or other sharpening systems/methods you all use to sharpen and keep your tools sharp.  I think I would like to get me a grinder with a nice aluminum oxide wheel but I'm not sure really where to start.  Any help would be much appreciated!

Brian, I use a cheap belt sander from harber freight tools, about $39.00 It gets them very sharp and the replacement belts are cheap. just one way you may consider.

We have a Grizzly (I believe) grinder that has a wetstone and buffing wheel for lathe chisels and other tools that need an edge.  It's pretty cool.  And you can buy replaceable wheels.  It runs at 120 rpm which isn't much at all but the water on the stone gets tools nice n sharp.

I use a belt sander as well.  I'm sure there are better sharpening systems available, I just haven't forked up the cash.

I use a belt sander and follow that up with a polishing wheel, a lot of guys don't believe polishing is necessary, but to me you will not get a better finish from anything else. Using slow speed grinders, is fine, but the key is heat build up, you do not want that, so if you use a sanding belt, don't apply ant more pressure to the chisel then you need to slightly remove any surface, watch your sparks, try for tiny ones not some huge light show...pappy

Went to Harbor Freight today and got one, great little sander for the money. A guy was passing out 20% off coupons, got the sander, a 5 pack of belts and a free LED flashlight for $37 and change. Thanks for the post!
