Title: Boots on the ground......
Post by: chatterbox on February 17, 2011, 06:03:24 AM
Alright men,

I'm just wondering what everyone has been seeing in their turkey woods if they are able to get out to them! :TooFunny:
Just wondering if you are seeing strutting yet, and hearing any gobbling.
I have seen a bachelor group of 5 toms, but have only seen the scat of hens in the area. A friend of mine saw a large flock around a local farm, but I haven't checked there.
How about you guys?

For my lease, I did a little bit of walking around this past weekend but it was more to make sure nothing had really changed (which it hasn't) since last season.  Our birds generally roost in the same areas and use the land the same way every season unless something has really changed, such as clearcutting.  I still need to go check out a spot a close friend told me about on a WMA, had planned on doing it tomorrow but now I've got to get my truck into the shop to get fixed so that killed those plans. I would say with the warm weather that started this week here in Georgia, if they aren't gobbling a little bit already, it shouldn't take too long for them to get fired up

GOBBLE-GOBBLE!!! I saw several flocks this week mostly hens and Jenny's.
gobblers are still deciding who is going to be boss. They will be getting together with the hens before long. A friend saw a flock of about 30 long beards last week, lots of fighting and displaying going on.

I had a chance to get out last weekend to check my best spot out. Come to find out they clear cut it, it went from about 1000 acers of woods down to about 10 trees  :character0029: so it'll be a few years before that area gets good again. Hopefully they replant it again? So I checked a couple of other areas and found some sign, but the birds are still bunched up and they haven't moved back into they're spring woodlots yet.

I was out to my property about three weeks ago and took my trail cam down.  Their was about 40 birds across the road from me in a picked corn field.  Can't wait until spring.  Scoot
