Title: HOW LONG BEFORE THE CRITTERS TAKE OVER
Post by: Spring Creek Calls on November 20, 2011, 01:07:59 PM
Crappiepro's buck got me thinking about how long your down deer or gut pile sits before the critters find it. I've seen both ends of the spectrum this year. I shot a buck with my muzzleloader in N. Ontario and the grey jays were on the pile as soon as I walked away. My hunting partner said there were ravens and eagles circling and down on it within minutes of me leaving. The next morning there was nothing left, not a speck of blood.
On the other end, I shot a buck 11/16 in SW MI and went back and checked the pile 2 days later and not a thing had been touched.

What's it like in your neck of the woods?

I can say the buzzards move in pretty quick around here LOL. I got 3 does with my bow this year and I throw the carcus in the small creek behind my house. They waste no time gettin the pickins off the bones. I dont know if its yotes or what but by day 3 every bone is gone LOL.

Gutpiles where I hunt are gone by the next AM.  I suspect coyotes, but there are plenty of buzzards in the area.

Buzzards will smoke a gut pile the same day here.
