Title: Lansky Knife Sharpening System
Post by: 870BkWht on October 17, 2011, 06:33:35 PM
I have one of these Lansky knife sharpening systems and I really like it for medium to small knives.  Ive been using it for about 4 years, but repeated sharpenings have led to the stones themselves being clogged with metal filings and excess oil.  Ive tried using a rag with a mild soap to clean the stones, and this does help, but does anyone have any tips for cleaning the sharpening stones to get some of that crud off of there and making a somewhat return to original form?  Ill try anything if anyone wants to share.

Thanks
Ben

I would try break cleaner. Spray it on and wipe it off untill you get the gunk off..

I have had a Lansky system for about 8yrs I think, I have sharpend my Gerber brand knifes and have never had any problems like your talkin about. I think if you took a small wire brush and some hot water it may work, I just woundn't push to hard. Another thing you could try is some sort of gun cleaning solvant with a wire brush. Good Luck, Crappiepro

This is from the Buck website.

HOW TO CLEAN AND CARE FOR YOUR SHARPENING STONE

Use a little extra fluid to clean and dry the sharpener after every use. Store carefully. Glossy grey streaks are a good indicator of debris build-up. Clean the sharpener thoroughly.

If using water or water-based honing oil, clean with soapy water.
If using petroleum-based honing oil, use the same oil or kerosene.
To scrub clean, use your finger or an old toothbrush.
Do not drop your sharpener. Being made of stone, it may break or chip.

Oil those stones and wipe them off(sometimes repeat) after each use.  Leave oil on them when finished.  I've had my same Lansky system since 1985 without any problems.

Try WD 40 helps lift the shavings out of the pores. You will like how the stone works after that application.
